Can Facebook still track you with a VPN?
A couple of days ago I got an email from Facebook saying that a certain site I'm logged into is violating their policies, specifically tracking me across the web (in other words, without me knowing, they're following me on the internet) using a third-party application. I wrote back asking what it means, and whether or not it was actually tracking me, as my understanding of the way VPN works is that it just redirects your internet traffic through it. If you use a VPN to connect to Facebook, this obviously wouldn't work - your VPN connects you to Facebook, but does not follow you around. If you connect through a VPN, Facebook will see you connect through it, and therefore track you, but it won't actually know that you're at Facebook, as your traffic is always encrypted.
So this is the result: Facebook says that my browsing history is being tracked by an unknown third party. Now, if I connect to Facebook through a VPN, how does this work? Well, as soon as I connect to Facebook, and then connect to my bank, and then browse the internet, and then connect to facebook again, Facebook's servers will be following my connections, and logging all of it. To Facebook, I've just told them that I'm on the internet now, even though my connection is through a VPN. But I'm also telling them that I'm at Facebook, even though I'm actually somewhere else. The whole point of a VPN is to protect your browsing privacy and keep you from being tracked online, so how does this work exactly? And why does Facebook say that I'm doing it, and not tell me that it's happening?
Here's the full reply that I got from Facebook: Your activity on the internet may be monitored by a third party. You can find out more about our practices regarding data retention and retention periods here.
The way a VPN works is to make you appear to be somewhere else, without giving away that fact. In other words, a VPN doesn't actually let you see what you're doing on the internet, but it gives you the appearance that you're seeing it. You can read more about this here.
