Is Windscribe dangerous?

Windscribe is a free VPN service. Like most VPN services, it doesn't encrypt traffic and that means that the connection can be monitored by anyone on the same network as the connection (eg your ISP or a government). While this may not be a problem for you, it is a concern for those with privacy and security concerns. If you are concerned, we recommend using the OpenVPN app instead.

How does Windscribe work? Windscribe does not use your IP address to connect to the internet. It uses the IP address of the VPN server and then redirects you to a website hosted on that server. This way you appear to be connected from the VPN server's IP address. You are still connected to the internet and so can still access the internet normally, but your connection will appear to originate from the IP address of the VPN server.

When you use Windscribe, the server where you are connected to is called a 'server'. Each server is called a 'location'. The Windscribe homepage has a map showing the locations of all servers. If you are only interested in the US server, then you can find that here:

When you use the website to connect, your browser downloads the Windscribe software and then the Windscribe software connects to one of the server locations. Windscribe uses one of the servers that is listed on the Windscribe site. When you sign up for the service you can choose which server you want to use. You can always change that if you want to. When you connect to the website, you are redirected to that server. The server uses the IP address of the Windscribe website to connect to the internet. That means you can access the internet normally, but will appear to be on the Windscribe server.

Do you get any bandwidth savings? No. When you connect to Windscribe, the server has to make a normal internet connection to connect to the internet.

Is Windscribe legal? Yes. Windscribe is not illegal.

If you use Windscribe to access unencrypted websites (eg Facebook, Netflix, Google etc.) you may be subject to fines in some countries. However, many of these websites have changed their policies recently and will automatically prevent you from accessing them if you are using a VPN.

Can I use Windscribe outside of the US?

Is Windscribe really free?

When I asked whether Windscribe was a scam, I received quite a few opinions in response. In some cases, their opinion is correct - they are free in the true sense of the word (as far as their value is concerned).

While in many ways, I find this free vs. Not-free distinction relevant, I will try my best to give a one size fits all answer (based on my understanding of both sides, with emphasis on what's free vs. What isn't).

If I miss something, do let me know! And please let me know if there is anything I have missed. Windscribe's Free vs. Not-Free Services The services offered by Windscribe appear to be quite extensive. In comparison to many VPN services out there, their user guide does come across as a bit too long. However, it's definitely worth taking a look.40 per month), includes:

Does Windscribe hide your IP?

We all know that there are various ways to hide your IP address from the web, but some of them seem a bit shady to me. So I decided to ask Windscribe directly if they hide your IP address. The company is based in Canada, which is also a safe bet, so I thought I'd ask them.

I didn't really expect answer, and I was a bit surprised to receive one so quickly. It's a pretty good answer.

Windscribe hides your IP address on all of its plans, and they will continue to do so. They aren't hiding anything, and they have no interest in hiding anything.

It's not just that, but it's a good summary of the problem and why they don't want to hide your IP address. They aren't trying to hide anything, they're trying to make your Internet experience better.

If you want to know more about the background to this article, you can check out my previous article about how I use Windscribe to hide my IP address. The issue. As an example, let's say you're at a coffee shop and you want to access a certain website, but you don't want to leave a record of where you've been. You might use a VPN to encrypt your traffic, so that it's protected against snooping, or even to access a site that is blocked at your home network. These are all fine, but in order to use these services you need to have an Internet connection. You can't use them if you're in a coffee shop, or if you're in a foreign country without an Internet connection.

That's why Windscribe offers a way for you to get an Internet connection, without leaving a record of your activity online. They provide you with a special IP address, and you use their service to access your usual sites.

It's like being on the dark web, but without the worrying about your ISP being able to tell what you're doing. This sounds really great, but as you might have guessed, it doesn't actually work that way.
