What is Oryza sativa used for?

What is the common name for Oryza officinalis?

Are there any other species of rice?

I'd love to find the most accurate answer from those who have studied all of them, and preferably the ones that have more than 1 genus. However, as long as it's answer that is based on scientific consensus, I will be happy.

From what I understand, the scientific name for Oryza officinalis is Oryza granulata, but I can't say whether this has been recognized by everyone. Furthermore, I'm having a hard time finding anything about "Oryza" other than some research about it being found in the Andes Mountains, not really sure where else Oryza granulata is found.

However, one thing that I can provide for the common name of O. Officinalis is that I'm positive it is a member of the Graminae subfamily, along with: Zizania persica, Arachis glabrata, Avena sativa, Secale cereale, Hordeum vulgare, Saccharum saccatum, Triticum aestivum and Zea mays What are the differences between the two? What about O. Granulata vs O. Officinalis - these are the things that I would appreciate the most being answered for a high level understanding.

For example, it seems like the former has been found in South-East Asia (based off of that list), while the latter has been found in South America. Can we just say that a grain found in South-East Asia could be classified as the correct O. Granulata, or are there some differences between them I should know about? If the latter seems to be more common, what does this mean for O.

According to the International Rice Research Institute, the name 'o.' means this strain is known as ORYZA GRANULATA, while the 'O. Gransula' means there was no description for it.

In some cases the names are used interchangeably but not always. For instance, in Brazil the common name for the species is Oryza granulata cv. BR101, indicating it's the variety 'BR 101', developed by BRASILIA 101 For another example, see here.

What is Oryza in english?

Oryza ( ) is a tropical grassyland of South Asia, where the plant Oryza sativa L. (Rice) is widely cultivated. This food crop is one of the most important crops in the world, providing food and income for over half of the world's population. It is a very important food source for Asian people, especially for the majority of the population in China, India, Indonesia, Bangladesh and Pakistan. A high quality rice will provide 30-50 percent of the calories and protein in a diet, whereas other food sources provide only 20-25 percent of calories and protein.

The Oryza sativa L. Genome sequence was completed in 2024 and the genome of the wild Oryza species was completed in 2024.

The International Rice Research Institute has created a database called RiceTAC (Thick Tiller Number) which consists of information about various rice genotypes and research projects on rice cultivation. In 1883, Professor Joseph B. Du Toit of the International Rice Commission proposed a project to increase rice production by developing new varieties. His study found that a new variety from the Philippines could be used as a donor parent and introduced to other countries where it produced a significantly higher yield. The new variety was named Oryza sativa L. Thomasii

As a result of the research conducted by Japan and others, the world's first rice hybrid was selected: the cultivar 'Taipei-41'. Its development and introduction greatly increased rice yields throughout Asia.

The development of modern rice cultivation technology led to the widespread use of herbicide-resistant crops. In 1998, the United Nations issued the Millennium Development Goals, which urged the global community to reduce the number of people living in extreme poverty by half, and the number of those suffering from hunger by half. In a speech to the U. General Assembly in 2024, U. President Bill Clinton proposed a global initiative to raise agricultural productivity in developing countries.
