What is structure in Google Docs?

Structure is a term that is used in the context of a document.

It simply refers to the layout of the contents inside a Google Docs document. One can easily see a structure for example, by looking at the 'Structure' tab on the left side of the window.

What are the various elements that constitute a structure? The content of a document can be grouped into a variety of categories. They include the title, text, lists, tables of contents and graphics. These elements can be grouped into various levels of hierarchy. The following table explains what elements belong to what category and what their level of hierarchy is:

Level of Hierarchy Title Text Lists Tables of Contents Graphics. Google Docs provides users with an easy way to view the hierarchy of all elements. Let's look at a sample document and see how it looks.

In the document shown above, we can see that there are five sections - 'Introduction', 'Lists', 'Tables' and 'Tables of Contents'. Each of these sections is divided into various paragraphs.

When you edit a document, the document gets saved with a new file name (as you can see from the image above). If you decide to save the document with the name of a different file, a new structure will be generated, which will have a unique name. For example, if you rename the document shown above to something else, you will be presented with a new structure, which has a unique name.

You can easily navigate through the hierarchy of the elements by going to the Structure tab. Once you are done, you can view the final document in another tab.

Can Google Docs have sections?

I am building a website that requires the use of Google Docs for the majority of the content.

I have a section that I want to be able to call out in my CSS file, such as header and footer. Is this possible?

Yes, you can create sections. Click the "Section" tab at the top of the Docs page. The first screen will give you options to create a new document, a section, or an outline.

You can also have multiple sections, but don't see a way to call them out in CSS. You would need to style the sections individually.

What are the boxes in Google Docs called?

I can't find this on the docs, but from what I've read on the internet, there are boxes with different sizes in Google Docs (word processor, etc). What do they call these things? These are "Text Boxes" or "Text Areas". They're used for entering text into a Google document. Go to the Layout tab and click the Text Box icon at the top of the box to choose from a list of types of boxes and the width of the box. You can also enter your own dimensions in the width field. The default settings are used if you don't specify a size.

For example, here is a Text Box that will use the width of the row.
