February 22, 2023. Reviewed by Peter T. I have been using the VPN service from Setup for nearly 2 years now, as a private network for my home network and a public network at my job. I have had some issues with VPN connections, but Setup seems to be working hard to address the concerns expressed by users and I am impressed by their commitment to customer service.

I use the free version of the service, so I can't vouch for the features available in the paid version. I like the setup VPN service because it does not require a subscription or account to connect, and I can connect to any of the protocols it supports (PPTP, L2TP, OpenVPN, SSTP) without any authentication required. You can set up clients to connect automatically at boot time; you can also involve this process in Windows 10.

I use the service as a virtual private network (VPN) to connect to the Internet from my home network. The client software installed on my Windows 10 PC acts as a gateway, allowing me to use the Internet safely and securely, as if my PC were in the same local area network as the VPN server. It is important to note that my Internet usage is not monitored by Setup, unless I make the configuration change to share my Internet IP address with Setup. I tend to use only the VPN network for my home network, but occasionally use the Internet directly from my laptop.

SetupVPN's connections are time-limited to one hour, after which the client software prompts for permission to reconnect. I find this to be a hassle, especially if I am SSHing to my home network, as it disrupts the connection. If I run into problems, Setup provides a hit or miss screenshot, and has an error log. I still want to know about problems before they become serious, and I can read the log on my own computer. However, for my personal VPN, this is not a problem.

SetupVPN provides a very stable connection with no problems, even under heavy load. My home network is a mix of Windows 10 PCs and Linux PCs, including laptops. SetupVPN works well even when connected to an Ethernet hub or router that supports UPnP.

How do I install VPN setup?

First install openVPN or whatever VPN you want to use and first set up a user account. Your VPN provider should provide a specific application that can be installed on your mobile device to connect remotely to your VPN. Each VPN provider may have a different name for it, so check with your provider for specifics. You'll find instructions on how to use it in each provider's app.

SetupVPN is available as a free and a paid extension. There's no in-app purchases. There's no requirement to create an account. The interface is a bit basic given the premium price but for well-known VPNs like TunnelBear, it works well. However, if you signup for a trial period and cancel it, you're asked to pay for a subscription. And there's no option for an in-app trial.
