The Windows version of OVPN is free, but only lets you connect to a single VPN server. You can also buy a paid version that unlocks the ability to connect to unlimited servers.

Android isn't Windows, however, so we make up for this shortcoming with an app that is both free and lets you connect to unlimited VPN servers. However, if you'd prefer to stay with our paid option, we've got the Windows version for Windows as well.

How do I install the OVPN app? To get started, you need to download the "OpenVPN Client" from Google Play or from the website. On the next page, you'll want to create an OVPN account on OpenVPN. Your credentials will be used to authenticate yourself as the owner of a new VPN server that is setup to connect to your public IP address.

You can also use the service without a VPN connection, just like a regular server setup. After you are done, you can start installing the app. Download here (Windows. An SSL VPN is just a standard tunnel client on your computer that is not expensive. There are two ways to create a connection with an SSL VPN - either directly on your computer using the normal windows firewall (as we show here) or using a third-party SSL VPN server. We recommend the third-party option for most people as you can use whatever you want, rather than being locked into a solution with a specific brand.

The important point is you don't have to buy a expensive SSL VPN client and can use whatever you want, as long as it supports SSL.

An SSL VPN works by establishing a secure connection between you and the VPN provider, so they can talk back and forth securely. An example of an SSL VPN connection is shown below. You can see there is no indication of what is going on at either end of the tunnel, the VPN company just connects to you and you get connected to them.

Note: Depending on which Android operating system you're running, there are a few different apps you may have to download. Windows Phone 8.1 The recommended OpenVPN client for Windows Phone 8.1 is the OpenVPN Connect app. It has all of the same features as the Android version, plus it can act as an OpenVPN Server.

To use OpenVPN Connect, download the app from the Windows Phone Store and install it. Then go to Settings > Network & Internet > VPN and select OpenVPN Connect.

Tap Add VPN to enter the VPN settings, then select a server from the list or enter your own address. In the Server type field, choose OpenVPN or OpenVPN Connect. If you want to connect over Wi-Fi, tap Wi-Fi Direct, and if you want to connect over a mobile data network, tap Cellular.

Tap the blue Connect button to begin connecting. The OpenVPN Connect service can connect to Android devices. To set it up, follow these steps.

Go to OpenVPN Connect. This will take you to a page with instructions. Click the blue Set up VPN button. Fill in the form, and then click the blue Continue button. This will take you back to the first page where you clicked Set up VPN. Click the blue Enable button to complete the setup.

On your phone, go to Settings > Security > VPN and choose OpenVPN Connect. In the VPN settings, enter your username and password. Then follow the rest of the instructions above for connecting to your VPN.

The recommended OpenVPN client for iOS is OpenVPN Connect. Once you have the app downloaded, open it and go to Settings > General > VPN. Add the OpenVPN Connect service to your account by selecting it and following the prompts.
