A few years ago, I was surprised to read that Spotify could be freely accessed by all Windows users.

Spotify is available for free, and can be accessed through the internet using the web client or using a dedicated app on mobile devices. The only way to circumvent this would be to install a third-party app called Spotify Media Player. This allows them to download any of their tracks from Spotify from outside of the program and play it offline.

It makes sense to us that Spotify was the first to make their service free when the music market is in a freefall. We can see it in the sales numbers. So why is the premium access available for all, without asking for a code or anything?

This led me to investigate how to bypass the firewall and bypass this free limit, as most users on Windows don't care about the subscription and simply want the music anyway. If you want to get around the Spotify Premium account and just stream the music, but don't want to spend any money, you have two options: Use Spotify directly on your computer, without any restrictions. Use an app like Spotify Media Player (available on our website) which allows you to download any of your tracks from Spotify from outside of the program and play it offline. The only downside is that you need to do it manually every time you run the client, it's not instantaneous like Spotify.

My choice was number 2: bypassing the firewall. It's possible to install a free app like Spotify Media Player on a rooted device, as that's all a firewall will see. Unfortunately, Windows doesn't have much of a root-programming scene, but we have a simple solution: You can use my Windows app, SporeDrive.

What kind of ISP blocks? The biggest part of the blocking issue comes from a lot of ISP's. Those big companies who run your wires and routers, the ones that have been slowly dying a slow and painful death for years. You want to kill them, so go ahead and download a router reset and reboot tool.

Once you turn your computer off it's good to wait until you try and load Spotify. If you go to the start menu and type Spotify without quotes you'll go directly to the app. Type the Spotify name in your browser to avoid any typing mistakes.

It could also happen because someone changed your hosts file after turning on your computer. A hosts file is similar to the hosts file you use when connecting to the web using Firefox. It's a table of Internet hosts and the IP address of each. Some people use it because it lets them use Google on your local network without actually typing the name of the websites in the search bar.
