How do I find URL packets in Wireshark?
Using Wireshark to analyze a packet dump.
Wireshark (or any packet sniffer) is really fun if you want to go deep into packets, dissect protocols, see how the protocol is implemented, and do so on a network capture. If you are not interested in that, just download the capture, open Wireshark, and click on the play button. I started using Wireshark as a beginner, and I found it very helpful to understand protocols. But how would you analyze a URL packet from a live capture, say on some website? For example, I'd like to see what URL it's taking me, and what ports are used by the protocol. Is there a simple way to do this? It was really easy for me. First, import the packet and run the filter.
Here I selected the traffic that has TCP port 80/tcp as source port, and a destination of www.bbc.com. Then press Ok.
Next, look for the IP protocol type, and select the Protocol: http. Here you'll see a bunch of fields that look like this. The first one is the URL; the second one is the domain name, so in my case it's www. You can find tons of information about the HTTP protocol on the net. For example, here is one that talks about the http headers that are mandatory when talking HTTP.
If you have a few days and a little bit of knowledge, I think it's definitely worth the effort. You also have the option to do this search on any capture - even the one you downloaded from the net. You just need to know what you're looking for. I don't know why, but the filters are the most confusing thing to me, and I've spent the last 2 hours trying to understand them. I guess I'm still a noob.
How to capture traffic from Android?
I have been searching but I haven't found anything.
My goal is to send data from Android to an online server in order to retrieve the data back from the server. I was thinking of using a WebView with an HTML page that requests data from the server and then displays it on the webview. Is there any other way to do it?
You can use the Java Bridge class, which allows you to write native code (in Java) and access Android's methods.
