How to connect OpenVPN to OVPN?
This is very basic setup, but should hopefully make things clear for anyone who needs to do this.
Install Ubuntu OpenVPN on server. I installed this on the default Lubuntu 16.04 image from
After installation completed without error, I ran apt-get update && apt-get dist-upgrade. This brought in several new packages that can be useful for various reasons later, although it isn't actually needed at this point. Create new user with the name ovpn-ovpn and run sudo passwd ovpn-ovpn. Next setup a new key file (ovpn-ovpn) using ssh-keygen. This generates a new private key /home/ovpn-ovpn/.ssh/idrsa
Use: sudo cp idrsa.pub /etc/openvpn/keys/ovpn-ovpn.pub
Then finally go to VPN connection settings and add an OpenVPN connection for ovpn-ovpn user with this newly generated public key in the ovpn-ovpn user and the previously created password of OPENVPN1234. Then save the settings and you are done.
Next, there are two ways to connect the VPN. Connect using network manager 2. Run openvpn directly as normal user ovpn-ovpn Open Network Connection manager click on edit Connection. Click on Add. Enter the new connection details that the openvpn will use and it is all set. It just connects over my mobile data connection automatically using default route which can get very expensive data charges since most people have unlimited data plans, so this could be a real pain depending on your situation. However, it can be tricky to get access back to your local network or local websites, since you have a public IP address from the OpenVPN Server. So you could just make a rule for internet in Network Manager to not connect to the internet while connected to the VPN so the public ip address from the VPN server will not be used.
