Is GeoTrust the same as DigiCert?

Is GeoTrust legitimate?

I found some questions I had not seen before!

I just read a question in the site forums from a new guy to the site and I was curious how legitimate GeoTrust is and if they are a reputable CA (Certificate Authority) as far as security certificates go. Here is the question: I have noticed that GeoTrust SSL certifications are often used to sign other companies website, e-commerce websites, etc. When it comes to webhosting companies and the likes, I am always told that our webhost needs to be in place first, before I can buy an SSL. Is this true? Does the GeoTrust certifications mean that our website is now safe to use and no hacks are possible?

My current webhost, www.blueicehost.com, does not require an SSL, but they recommend you should get one to prevent "web hacking" etc. Do you have any idea if GeoTrust is a legitimate CA?

Hi there! The answer is yes, GeoTrust is an independent, trusted and very competent CIt is highly recommended to put a valid HTTPS certificate on your website. However, there's always a chance of an SSL certificate to be broken or even hacked. It is wise to know your web hosting service provider's information and what their SSL policy is. That way, you can use a trusted SSL certificate for your website and know the level of security offered by your webhost.

There are two things you need to do:1. You need to know the details of your webhosting service provider and what kind of encryption system they use.2. Then, when you go to Google, Bing, etc. You need to put Also, make sure to put a valid SSL on your website so that it is easier to find and click on links from the search engines.

However, if your website is a personal site and you are the only one who owns it, then you could just download a free SSL certificate from your webhosting company and put that on your website, or you could sign up with the free program of an SSL certificate provider like Let's Encrypt, and use that certificate instead. That way, you'll be able to click on links from the search engines without having a valid SSL certificate on your website.

Is GeoTrust the same as DigiCert?

As a newby to certificate authority (CA), I have been reading/listening to/reading the blogs related to GeoTrust certs . I want to buy the current version because I was unable to get my CA root cert accepted when trying to install the geo trust one. I am asking if it is possible to go to a place like digiCert and see a full list of all the different versions

It appears that DigiCert has several versions while GeoTrust has 2, but just wondering if either of these are the same

If so how is any certificate distinguished from the others (like some sort of a 'check box' option)

If not, could you explain what GeoTrust is

Digicert is owned by Symantec, Symantec did this to avoid being labeled by the NSHowever, in a roundabout way you can easily distinguish the CA certificates since Symantec's CA is on most lists of dangerous CAs. The reason for the double-GeoTrust 2.2, I believe, was because they had two different kinds of enterprise certificates - one for small businesses, and one for companies that handle sensitive data. The GeoTrust root cert in the small business variant does not require "Advanced Encryption Standard" (AES), while the GeoTrust root cert for the sensitive data variant does require AES. GeoTrust's A-Root certificate is only used on a few web browsers for SSL.

GeoTrust would make a good "first level" certification, since it will give strong encryption with minimal support costs for the end user. When you want to be sure that your certificate is encrypted, you should get a certificate from a root CA that is trusted by major browsers. Symantec CA is on all lists of "dangerous" CAs. In particular, Symantec's root CA should be marked as "high risk", and should never be recommended to anyone outside of a few specialized websites.

The "dangerous CA" problem of Symantec is largely due to that the root certificates are included within the WinXP install. Once installed, many users will never change them.

However, the problem with using your own root certificates is that you're not getting the added protection from your "upstream", like SSL Labs or SSLScan. If the chain validation fails, you're out of luck! It also means that any updates will be rejected.

Who owns GeoTrust?

What kind of SSL Certficate do they sell?

Do you know which companies use this cert? Do you use a GeoTrust cert or know if your clients use one?

Is it the only cert that the company sells? Is it the cheap version of an expensive cert. Is it some other version of the same cert for another company/company owner? Are they just being greedy, and asking a little more money, but still have the same certificate? When I say "Certificates", I do not mean to use certs, etc., because when people ask who is "GeoTrust" you are referring to what is essentially certificates with a company name on it. You can also be referring to a specific product line of a company or individual.

I work with "Secure Pages" a lot. The company uses "GeoTrust". Sometimes I get asked if I know who they are, or how to contact them, so I answer no to both questions.

Does anyone own "GeoTrust"? A lot of times people know the company, and say "Oh yes. GeoTrust" - because they know the company, and what product they sell. So I try to clarify that question more, and then see if they know the answer.

I just answered a question today that really made me think: A man asked his father if he knew any good locksmiths. "Well," said his father, "there's this one, but he's really tricky. Give me the name of someone else."
What a wonderful question (assuming the man was using it as a joke). I think we've come a long way since when I worked in HR. :) The truth is, most people won't give us the time of day.

A common complaint among my customers is: "There must be something wrong with my email (or a link) if I don't receive a personal follow-up!" I am always surprised by this, and tell my customers that if they don't give a person's name or telephone number, I will call them back with their problem. (Many do.)

Thanks for commenting - I think that there are two types of questions that work very well (and those are 1 & 2): 'What's wrong with my site'.
