In the next series we would like to present the 10 most typical things in daily life in Greece. When you travel to Greece then the first thing which you have to try is mousakas. This is a classic Greek dish: chicken meat or lamb minced together with tomato sauce, olives, capers and seasonings, is filled into a pastry crust and baked. Mousakas can be found in every local Greek restaurants, tavernas and pizzerias. Mousakas are popular either at breakfast, lunch and dinner or any time at all throughout the day.
The main characteristic of mousakas is that they do not include any type of cheese. Greek salad is a traditional dish in any local Greek restaurant. Besides the main ingredients which are lettuce, cucumbers, tomatoes and onions, an authentic Greek salad usually contains feta cheese and olives.
What part of Greece is the best to stay in?
I want to move to Greece and go there for a few years
I want to move to Greece and go there for a few years. Hi.e. We are thinking of going to Greece in July/August 2025 for about 2 months. We will be traveling with our dog. Our plan is to live in Athens for a couple of months and then move on to Athens' suburbs. We would like to live in a place that is not too expensive (I know many people living here pay very high rent for their apartment) and has a lively neighborhood. Is there any area in Athens that we could consider? We are looking for an area that is well equipped with shops and restaurants. Any suggestions? Thanks.
1 answer. Best Answer. I live in Athens (and used to live in the suburbs). Personally, I found the older neighborhoods in Athens to be much more lively and fun. My best areas were Omonoia, Gazi, Kolonaki (which is the most modern of the older areas).
You can also find nice apartment buildings in the suburbs. I was lucky enough to have some family friends who own a few apartments and we would visit them during the summer months and I'd always find myself drawn to the area where they were living (I even had one of their apartments! But I'd been a guest at their place so we never decided to rent it).
I have to agree with the other posters on this thread, don't expect your local supermarket to be fully stocked with all the stuff you might need for the summer. I tend to shop in towns closer to where I am going to be staying and stock up on canned and dried goods, as well as any local produce. I even have a list of food I want to get before I go. Don't eat McDonalds or Pizza places in Greece. They are not worth the money and I won't even get sick.
There are more than a few people with money in Greece who travel during the summer but I wouldn't say it's typical or expected. You'll find people living on beach resorts doing nothing more than swimming in the sea and sun bathing.
If you do decide to travel during the summer, do try and visit some of the many seaside villages. I've been to several of these in Greece.
Thank you for the very helpful suggestions!
Is Greece expensive?
By Katja Boehm and Christos Karamanis
The cost of living in Greece is high, but we think that it's not too different from the average cost of living in other Western European countries.
As such, some might think that it's not really an affordable destination for long term travel. However, we do think that the cost of living in Greece is not bad for a place that has become a popular retirement destination. The reason is that this country offers some unique features and advantages that make life here cheaper than in many other developed European countries.
Quality and variety. Greece has a great deal of quality and variety in its restaurants and shops. For instance, one of the best restaurants in Athens is not your typical Greek restaurant: it's Kalyvia, which is also famous for being the oldest food market in Athens, and where you will find plenty of great food. Another great place to eat is on the island of Kos. Here, you can try traditional meals in local restaurants that serve only grilled fish, octopus and meat. Or you can go to a typical Kos taverna for moussaka and grilled meat dishes. If you want to eat well, you should visit Chania in Crete, where you can find some of the best and most authentic Greek food in Europe.
Greece also offers a wide variety of shopping malls and department stores. Here, you can buy everything from clothes to electronics to furniture. In addition to that, there are plenty of tourist attractions and historical sites that you can visit. They include the Acropolis in Athens, the Meteora in Thessaloniki, the ancient Greek ruins at the Akrotiri in Cyprus, the White Tower in Mycenae, and so much more. We highly recommend visiting all of them.
The variety and quality of what is available here in Greece makes it easy for you to find a place that suits you. This is why so many people choose to stay here and enjoy their holidays in this country.
A short distance to most places. The distance to most of the places that you might want to visit is not as far as in many other countries. For example, the distance from the main tourist destinations in Athens is under 30 minutes. In addition, there are plenty of cheap flights from Western European cities to Greece.
