Who is the founder of Hubstaff?

Mark Hachborn and John Maeda.

Mark Hachborn and John Maeda are the founders of Hubstaff. They both spent over 30 years working for large companies (Netscape, Yahoo, Lucent, AT&T) on all sorts of technology projects. They have always been at their best when they were working on products and products to be released. So, what made them finally take the leap and start a company?

How did Hubstaff start? After spending 30 years working at companies that didn't allow you to work on your own products, in 2025 we decided to launch Hubstaff to try and give ourselves some autonomy to do that. We'd both worked on products at Netscape and Lucent, and in the Yahoo product org. And so we thought it was a good time to be independent and start our own product.

We're not a typical software company. We wanted to be able to have ownership of our product and to see it through to success. That's not to say it was easy, but it's just not how software companies typically work. We had to make a commitment to it. We didn't want to fail or get acquired by a big company that would let us fail or wouldn't support our product after it was launched.

I know that's a pretty bold thing to say, but we really did feel that way. We made a commitment to Hubstaff and we've been very happy with it.

Why did you choose that direction? Why didn't you go for a more conventional approach to software development? You can get the feeling in software companies that everybody is building the same software. People are all kind of clones, they do the same thing. The truth is that not everybody does the same thing. Everybody has different skillsets, different experiences and if you allow yourself to be open to different ways of doing things then you can find lots of different solutions to problems that you don't necessarily have to do the same way as other people.

There are lots of different ways of solving a problem. You may be a web developer, but you may also be an accountant. There are lots of different ways of doing things. You could be a developer and a product manager, or a PM and a developer, or a designer and a developer.
