I see a lot of articles about Netflix problems on Linux/Android. It seems like no one has ever figured out how to solve the problem. The biggest issue is that Netflix is using some weird DRM tech and it's way beyond what every other TV or movie app uses.

Yes, that's been around for a while and not that many people seem to know it exists or think it might be useful to them: if you install the package that contains the script in question, you will be able to run an executable that (after running) starts up the "Netflix for X" GUI, which is really just a collection of "wrapper" commands that make the necessary calls on its own system. There are several different wrappers, including rin and ril from xubuntu (which are pretty stable for me), or pnmsl, which is also pretty good for xubuntu. However, I think this discussion is really about the specific version of the "R" wrapper provided with the "netflix-desktop" package.

The "R" wrapper uses the /usr/bin/r command to control the Netflix for X GUI. By default, the wrapper starts the gui in the root user account, so for most things you just run a "sudo rnf" to start it. In general, though, there are a few things you should know about this thing before using it.

The first thing is that you must get the most recent version of the R wrapper. The Netflix for X GUI is fairly well supported, but the most recent version appears to have some issues which were fixed in the last major revision. For instance, when you open the gui, it will display a message saying that it is "Using Netflix (v 4.3.2)" at the top of the window, but if you look in ~/.r-client.log it shows a message saying that you're running an earlier version. You'll also need to specify a user for the rnf process to use, instead of logging in as root, so use a user who has some kind of authorization rights (ie, root does not).

The second thing is that as of now, it looks like the wrapper may only work on a small subset of devices: the LG Nexus 4, LG Nexus 5, ASUS Nexus 7, and maybe others.

3) Use the Netflix Premium app on your home network only if you've got an HDTV. Now, this is a big one: only use the Netflix Premium app on your home network if you've got a high-definition TV. The reason is simple: Netflix Premium works best on high-definition TVs, and so does watching the content streamed from Netflix Premium on those TVs. It's the difference between watching a standard-definition movie streamed from Netflix and watching a high-definition movie streamed from Netflix. That's the big difference.
