What is the safest free VPN to use?
We explain how to choose the best one for you.
Free VPNs have their limitations but they are a great way to get started on the Internet safely. You get to test out the tools without having to risk anything. With that in mind, we want to shed some light on what a truly free VPN is.
What is a free VPN service? A VPN is any piece of software or app that allows you to create a virtual private network. The VPN creates an encrypted tunnel from your router or phone through which you can send and receive information securely.
A VPN encrypts your internet connection by encrypting your data at a specific level. However, when a VPN is free, it will usually only be able to encrypt your local network. They may offer to extend this level of encryption across your entire internet connection. For example, ExpressVPN, offers a free VPN with encryption all the way up to 256-bit or higher.
When a VPN offers free encryption, it means they are charging you for the service. They are using the term free to imply they are giving you an extension of what you get when you pay. This is an important distinction because with paid VPNs, you are getting everything included in the price.
Why is a VPN a necessity? You can't trust the websites that you go to every day. It's not your friend. They aren't even technically your friend. A few shady practices mean they are a liability.
The government has the power to demand you to turn over your data. You might even be monitored by the feds if they think you're a terrorist. The police can come knocking on your door and ask to see your phone. If you're not careful, you could find yourself in jail for the rest of your life.
Even worse, the companies you trusted to keep your data safe might betray you. There have been stories about data breaches that affected thousands of people. These are the scariest scenarios. You could find your name, address, and other private information in someone else's hands.
It's not fair that you should be held responsible for someone else's crimes. It doesn't make sense that websites should be responsible for the actions of other users.
Is RedCard VPN safe to use?
A review
What is RedCard VPN?
RedCard VPN is a VPN provider based in Costa Rica that offers unblocked US Netflix, unblocked UK Netflix, unblocked Australian Netflix, and unblocked German Netflix. The VPN service can also be used for other blocked websites and apps in your countries or abroad.
They claim to offer unlimited data through all of their servers. But we couldn't find any unlimited plans at the moment.
How much does it cost to use RedCard VPN? At this time Redcard is only available for Windows, Mac, and iOS. There are no plans available for Android or Blackberry.
However, they do have a special offer that could be a good deal. When using their services for 2 months you get 10 months for free.99 a month. Here is a detailed list of features:
4 Server Locations (North America, Europe, Asia, and South America). 8 DNS Servers (to unblock different websites). Unlimited VPN Data. Double Encryption. Customizable VPN Connections. Dedicated Support Desk. And a lot more! ? As with any free service there is always some risk. Like any VPN service, RedCard VPN is not 100% safe. There are always risks but I will explain why I think they are less risky than most services.
Let's talk about the positives first. The good. High speeds. We tested their servers in Germany on an iPhone 7 (at least for the standard download speeds). I have to say that our speeds were very impressive. Even on the slower servers with 200 kb/s to 200 mb/s. We got fast speeds but we couldn't test anything over 5 Mbps.
I used the fastest server where I experienced high ping and lag times. With our tests we reached speeds around 30 Mbps. For Netflix the download speed was great.
In general, we got fast speeds even for downloads of high-bitrate movies. Of course it depends on the server you are connected to.
My speeds were close to what you would see if you connect from US or Europe.
