Is Minecraft ok for a 7 year old?

This is a discussion on ?

Within the General Gaming & MMO Discussion forums, part of the KnightOff topic category; In response to some of the comments here on how I should wait till the boys are old enough to be entertained by the game: I'm not the parent, and have . I'm not the parent, and have played a lot of these online games, (including my own) that they enjoy. Its what they enjoy and not at an age where its dangerous as a parent - I wouldn't wait for a game like that till the boys are 7 years old! I've been asked to check out some other games in the past as well. I like them all but the reason for playing this particular game is that its free. It can be played anywhere, any time. Not limited by my sons schedule. I think it also has other advantages for me (as a single parent) such as being able to play with them, etc.

As much as I would love for all my children to be interested in video games, I know that I am not going to always be able to be present for them while they are playing (school, work, etc. And so I really like that this game is available to be played on there own schedule and without supervision. If something were to happen while the boys are playing it there alone then that's really no ones fault but their own. No one else would have to worry about taking the boys somewhere "for supervision" or waiting for them to come home.

That said, I don't think it is at all a bad thing for a child to be able to play games on his/her own schedule. There's some games that do require a significant amount of cooperation in order to progress through a level or in order to finish the game. Those games, for us, would not be acceptable for 7 year olds, as the game really does rely on the fact that your child will go through the levels one at a time. Otherwise, there'd be nothing but frustration as well as failure for the child.

All of the games I have listed above can easily be completed by a 7 year old child.
