Does Apple have Wi-Fi hotspot?
I'm trying to decide whether I should buy a MacBook Air or a MacBook Pro.
I'm pretty sure that the Air would be fine with my usage, but I don't have any particular use case for the Pro yet. However, I do need a mobile hotspot.
So I was wondering: does Apple have a mobile hotspot in the product line? I'd prefer a phone app, but I'd settle for a USB modem (or even a USB-C modem). I'm willing to buy an old Apple modem that's no longer supported, if needed.

A Wi-Fi hotspot is a device that broadcasts its own Wi-Fi network. In other words, it acts as a router.
Apple's Wi-Fi base stations don't broadcast any Wi-Fi network, they only act as access points. They don't have a built-in wireless router.
So no, you can't buy an Apple Wi-Fi hotspot. In fact, Apple doesn't even make Wi-Fi base stations anymore. The current iPhone and iPad Wi-Fi base stations are designed by AirTies, a company that Apple acquired last year.

First of all, does the answer not cover the case where a user wishes to buy an older model which has the hardware and software in place for a hotspot? If so, how does this help with a MacBook Air? jstoobAug 1 '12 at 16:28. @jstoob The answer is still correct. My question was about the case where someone wants to buy a MacBook Pro and use it as a hotspot. The answer still applies.
