Is Unlocator the same as VPN?

and is one superior than the other?

Hello. I have a friend who uses vpn to protect his network at a place which the company only allows VPN connection. My friend says they are very slow when he surfs/accesses the net etc.

So I am interested in buying an Unlocator for my own use. As I am not able to get an VPN with my current ISP. Is it the same as vpn and what benefits it offers over vpn?
Any pointers would be great! In what way is your current ISP blocking vpns? Are you locked into a specific vendor? If so, any chance of changing to another Vpn provider is limited at best. The only way your ISP can legally block VPN's is to ban the protocols, and this would not stop the flow of data but it would stop it reaching your router.

I think from my own experience VPN tunnels are better than unlicenced tunnels due to there encryption, and the fact that you have a clear shot at the data leaving the point of origionation instead of the ISP. What your friend is using is not really a VPN unless you are connected to a remote server of a VPN provider. Unless its some strange form of VPN tunnel where the server is actually in another country, no it's not a true VPN.

Unlocator's will do the same things but not by way of VPN connections. Its basically a free proxy service which allows you to mask your IP address, and access the internet as if it was a computer from outside your ISP's control (if that makes sense). It will allow you to unblock websites via a blacklist, or to allow you access to an alternate ip address like google or facebook to get around website blocks without having to pay for a fake IP, etc etc. You need a proxy/unlocator service on your router in order to install. Unlocator's are free for 1 month and they are free forever and can use you any device not just your PC, and your router needs to support the service. After the free month expires you will either need to add extra paid for monthly features such as a faster connection or advanced functionality like the option to filter your traffic more efficiently.

I dont own a computer (hence why I said PC) and for this reason alone I think that would make it very easy to install at home.

Is Unlocator smart DNS safe?

The issue with security is that it can never be assured and I am not talking about the internet here but also our private networks such as our own home network.

So if you are going to trust a service and you want security, look for the company that has already gone through many years of testing and research to develop these type of system to keep them secure while maintaining a smooth delivery for the end user Unlocator does have a very large client base and it is not known if it would be compromised if their data was accessed by third party or an adversary. It seems however they have already been under scrutiny for 3 months because they changed their website design and added "unlocator.me" to the navigation menu above the logo

I personally do believe they will be more safe from hackers trying to hack in on the systems than one of the older DNS system being used by many clients for years. Not only because they have the resources to create another platform, they have also given themselves a very serious firewall against any attempt to gain any type of access into their database at this point in time because they have a few firewalls in place and there will be additional barriers that are put in place as time passes.

They claim they update DNS records every 5 minutes from anywhere on the globe using their DNS servers to avoid anyone from tampering with the results. If this were a fact, then it would be extremely wise to look for an alternate service and not add to the stress of an already existing stressful situation, the DNS record would need to last longer than the average person uses their phone. There are also many services offered to handle this kind of task but all the services that offer this kind of solution charge a fee per month and this does make it very costly when you need such services in life.

This service would be perfect for businesses but I don't see any real business that would use this service, they want control and if you can't get that then what is the point of using a system like this? They also claim that they provide a backup by sending out a notification to all clients and it will send them all of the latest updates and this again seems quite risky and there must be other security precautions to do backups. They could be hacked into at any time without you having any idea Their support team provides you a very strong form of communication, especially after hours on the weekends.
