Why is Surespot shutting down?

We have always aimed to deliver a free service for all.

We don't believe that charging money for this service is an appropriate way to support our work.

We will be shutting down Surespot completely by the end of the year. You can still signup for the mailing list for a one-off email update on any new releases or changes to the service. You can also use the contact form to get in touch with us.

The Surespot service will be shut down in the coming months, so you can no longer use it to send and receive encrypted messages or attachments from computers and phones. When will this happen? Surespot will be shutting down by the end of 2024. This is around the time when we will cease providing regular support for the service.

However, we're continuing to provide free support for existing users until the end of 2024. If you have any issues with your Surespot account after this date, please contact us.

What will happen to my data? We're not going to be able to store your Surespot account after the end of 2024. However, you'll still be able to access your messages and attachments through your browser or mobile apps, or through the Surespot webmail interface.

We're going to keep your messages and attachments encrypted. However, we can't guarantee that they'll be safe against unauthorised access.

How will I get my data? Your messages will be stored securely by Surespot's partners, Microsoft and Google, in their respective cloud services. Surespot will take care of getting your data from these providers and passing it on to you. Why do I need to re-register? When you signup for the service, you create a unique Surespot account that's linked to a unique email address. This is so you can verify your identity with the sender and recipients of messages you send.

If you've signed up for Surespot in the past, we'll ask you for a little bit of your contact details to make sure you're who we think you are. We'll also give you an option to link your old Surespot account to your new one.

What texting app is encrypted?

Answering this for iOS, if I use Signal or WhatsApp, does that mean they can't view the content of my messages?

Does that mean iMessage is a safe alternative. And should I go with one of them? Thanks. If you use WhatsApp or Signal, then they are just as safe for your conversations as they would be if they were not encrypted at all. If somebody tries to read your messages, they will see nothing but garbled characters.

What Encryption Does. Encryption allows you to send messages that only you (your phone) can read. The only way that anybody else could read your message (after it gets to them) is if they stole your device or somehow had access to all the information contained in your device's encryption key.

However, encrypting anything doesn't ensure that only one person can access the content, so you will need to decide on what your threat model is. You mentioned the following three options: Allowed: Anyone who wants to steal your phone will be able to see all the information within it, including any content within encrypted messaging apps. Allowed: When you receive your attacker's message, that message will only be readable if they control the device you are using and also have access to the encryption key. Denied: No amount of technology will allow you to guarantee that only you will ever read the content of a message, even if it is encrypted with a technology like AES or Curve. In general, only the Allowed and Denied options offer perfect protection from any known threats, and they also provide excellent usability and cost-efficiency. The Allowed option means you don't need to trust the security of your devices, the Denied option ensures that all of your important information will always stay private.

Why Use Encryption at All? Encryption provides two main reasons why you would want to use it: Confidentiality and Integrity. A message sent from A to B is only useful if it can only be interpreted by A and B. However, if you used unencrypted messages, you'd never know whether it had been read and decrypted correctly, and you would not be able to confirm that A really sent it to B.
