1x standard, users are asked to provide a user ID and password. In Cisco IOS Release 12.3(5)T, you can now use the IKEv2 method to authenticate the connection.

Using the IKEv2 method, users must log in to the router using their user ID and password, or a token, instead of using the traditional RADIUS or PAP/CHAP-MD5 methods. The requirement to have a RADIUS server on the network, which has been an additional cost to many organizations, is eliminated. The IKEv2 authentication method does not require that the RADIUS server reside on the router or access point. Instead, the router uses a lightweight authentication server that is installed and configured on the router.
