My husband was a video game tester at one point of his career before we moved away from doing that, then he did the same thing on his current job, now he is a server for a major company (who provides their own hardware). But my husband is currently being made the supervisor for 3 stores. This means I will be going over most or ALL of the games that go out with these stores. It is a LOT of work. Sometimes I wish that he wasn't doing that part because it is taking all of his time and he is working at 2 and 3 jobs now. But I still think he has a great position and it pays pretty well.

We are working on creating a website for him to have his own store on where he can set up all the games that he has access to, including the private servers. The problem is that he takes about 12-15 weeks off around Christmas and Easter, and when he is off it is very hard to find someone who will do it. We are working on some people like I say, but we have been trying for 4 years now. We had a guy who took about 6 weeks off in 2 years.and of course he lost his job. This year we have only been able to hire one tester for the entire year, so it is very hard to find even people to hire as testing people.

I'm sure everyone has something they'd like to be doing. When my husband said the "video game" thing, he meant PC games, as well as console.

Do game developers get paid for this work? When I was in college I wanted to learn the industry. So, I tried to find a game tester position in Seattle (previously I worked in games as a writer and artist). Now this seemed a little low for a full time job for someone with no education or previous experience. So, I decided to find out how much I should be getting per hour based on my experience and education.

Job Description. The job description states that they're looking for game testers who are experienced at evaluating, reporting, and analyzing all types of problems, including bugs, crashes, and other issues encountered while playing our games. The actual gameplay is a pretty short section in the job description, so I used the first four sentences as the basis of my job description. My job title was Lead Game Tester. I was also the only applicant and was interviewed, but no offer was made. It seems like that's an incredibly low rate, but that's good because I have nothing but good things to say about my interviewers.

Now, I want to take all that knowledge I gathered throughout my years of working in the games industry, and come up with a reasonable estimate of what an experienced game tester would actually make. Is Game Tester a stressful job?

This is a question that I've never really cared to ask myself.

While I've been working at Game Tester since the very beginning, I've only experienced pressure when it comes to getting a product approved by the executive team. There are times when you have a week or two of nothing to do, which means the company is just sitting on its hands, and no amount of QA work can bring about approval of the project, so people get restless. But for the most part, things are pretty relaxed around here, and I've never had to run to my boss and tell him that I don't want to be a tester anymore.

I know there's a reason for this. One, they're more concerned with getting their own stuff out into the public eye. Two, if a QA is working his or her ass off on something and it fails, it puts the whole company in a bad light. On the other hand, if a QA fails to provide feedback on something, that just makes the executive team look bad. This is something I don't really care for, as it doesn't seem fair to give someone a bad name just because they failed to do their job. And I personally have never failed to find some way to test the game. It may be that there's something missing that I'm not seeing, or maybe my knowledge of the game is too limited. I just don't want to get a bad reputation for having a bad time testing a game.

So my question to you guys is, how stressful is it to game test? If you were to answer this question, please keep in mind that you're talking about how it is right now. If the environment changes, and I end up being too burnt out to keep going, I won't mind if I just quit and find a different job.

My biggest gripe with QA is when they take a game in it's current state and try to determine it's "current" state. Often, these people aren't the people who are actually playing the game - they're the ones who have just tested it for a week straight, and don't really know the current state of the game, but have an idea. Now, that's a problem of a QA - you should know the current state.
