Is PIA still a good VPN?

PIA has been a decent VPN. It's been around since 2025 and used by the likes of Wikipedia to hide from censorship and by many governments to bypass the Great Firewall. But it has a few problems and we've had to move on since.

Here is a list of the problems: It's slow. It's not open source. Their privacy policy is poor. Their support staff only want to support China. They don't have a "Privacy" label on their products. Their apps are not free. Now, I'm using a Chinese VPN that has those exact same problems, but I think PIA has still got it right. They are not perfect and you're right, it will be a tough sell if they don't have a free version of their product. We'll talk about how this may be something that could put them in better shape.

Let's start with speed. I was originally a fanboy for the way PIA performed until I had to try both PIA and Golden Frog. I found PIA to be too slow for my liking.

I tried it on all my devices and it was the same thing every time. Whenever it started a download, it would just be slow. For example, downloading 5GB would take almost an hour. In order to keep it going, I would need to do a manual reconnect every 30-60 minutes because it would shut down (in which it would continue the download).

I got so frustrated trying to use this VPN that I tried Golden Frog. Golden Frog was extremely fast compared to PIIf I needed to download something 5GB, it would do it in a few minutes, no issues. I have no clue why this would be the case since Golden Frog is probably using OpenVPN and not some proprietary network protocol like PIA's VPN.

It also seems like PIA has a lot of problems when it comes to connecting to their servers. They have no idea how many servers they have and I can never seem to find one that is consistently fast and working. Even after finding a server that worked most of the time, it would work on my phone but not my computer. I have to find the right connection and retry, over and over again.
