There are two main reasons why you may see an IP address instead of a MAC address: A device has a link-local (RFC3927) or loopback (RFC6953) address, and not a true permanent address. No, the OS will typically have reserved two addresses for devices (either IPv4 or IPv6), and the OS assigns them to the device. These addresses are called private addresses or private IP addresses.

Private IP addresses are special addresses assigned by the local DHCP server to devices as part of the process of configuring the device with a private IP address (and setting up the default gateway address). What happens if I do have a private IP address? Well, the answer to that is that you probably don't. It can't hurt though. If your device uses private IP addresses, then the DHCP server knows about them, they will be allocated and assigned in your absence, and all configuration will be done automatically for you.

When your device is offline, it uses a default gateway (an IP address which can be defined by the DHCP server, or just by being set by the operating system on first startup). You won't necessarily have an IP address, and when you come back to your router you may have to wait a while before your assigned IP address comes up. So if you want to know what address your device was assigned, it may be quite a long wait until the DHCP server comes back online and assigns it again.
