Is OpenVPN no longer free?

ORIGINAL POST: I received a message this morning from an OpenVPN user who is trying to get their work computer to securely access a home computer that needs VPN protection. This is pretty common these days (for instance, I just used it to log into two or three computers at a conference with me as the server). They have a static IP (I don't know where they get it) and want to avoid having to buy a static IP. They have a Mac and a PC. I don't know anything about their setup other than they have multiple OS X accounts logged in. I assumed he was using a commercial VPN service, but he has a few dollars per month to burn and so I think it's free. I figured there is only one way to find out.
For security reasons, I'm keeping their identity secret by making them anonymous and writing this post under the name of the person from whom I got their e-mail address. But I won't give any tips on how to set up his computer and the problem they have and the solution I think they will like.
They came by, and went over their problem. One of his main problems is they get different IP addresses for their computers in different locations they say some places he gets a static IP while at home and some places a dynamic IP and that one of the IP addresses is a VPN address the address of the firewall for this VPN instance, but it is actually assigned to one of the other computers. (It's not clear to me whether the firewall has multiple IP addresses or not and what they mean by assigned. Maybe that's a question for someone else? Anyway, that happens sometimes when static and dynamic IPs are assigned to the same computer at one time. But it shouldn't happen all the time.) That means he can't access his company's networks because computers in the cloud behind the firewall only listen for static IPs assigned directly to the device and it won't listen to a VPN address.
Is OpenVPN access server free?
I have an access server.
I just want to share it using VPN and OpenVPN (to bypass a firewall). But when I set the access server to use OpenVPN, it asks for a username and password to access the internet. Is this because the access server is not a VPN server? How do I make the access server a VPN server? Is this even possible?
No it's not. It's because it's a server used for authentication and authorization.
If you want to provide access to a network, you'll have to build your own proxy. It's not a matter of "is it possible" but rather "how can I implement such a setup".
How do I access OpenVPN access server?
I have set up an OpenVPN server and I have added that IP as a static route on my desktop, and have given that IP address as a route to my VPN client.
Now when I connect to the VPN my local router gives the router IP instead of the OpenVPN server IP. But how can I resolve that? I am able to ping the router via VPN.
I am using DD-WRT with VPN-Gate (which is free). I have tried this on my iPad using the VPN, but all my wireless devices still see the router's external IP. I have done some research to try to solve this problem, however with the current state of DD-WRT with OpenVPN and also with OpenVPN-Gate it is really impossible to create a working configuration. Do you know if it works any different on DD-WRT than other operating systems or routers?
