Can you read barcodes with a camera?

I know that it's possible to scan a barcode with a phone, but what if you wanted to scan the barcode from a distance? Can you use a camera to read a barcode or would you need something more complex? I am planning to scan the barcodes of books and movies to save myself the trouble of finding the book in my pile. I have a Canon EOS Rebel T1i that I use for photos. I also have an Instax camera that takes pictures. With the Instax camera, there is a built-in lens and the ability to print photos. Would either of these cameras be able to read a barcode? If so, how would I go about doing it?
