What is the best port for PIA VPN?

How do I connect to PIA with OpenVPN?

The instructions to connect to pia.

Com with openvpn are missing in the manual for creating and configuring pia, but I would assume it's similar. The configuration file is located in /etc/openvpn/client.conf . That doesn't even mention PIA in it. What should I write to the configuration file to actually connect to the website.

You do know that there's an OpenVPN GUI for Linux right? There's a windows GUI too, I just haven't heard anything about a good one for Linux. But if you like your command-line way of working - the PIA client is pretty easy to configure. First you download the client from the PIA site then you connect using the command below (make sure to add your own vpn user before using this so you can log into the network). Then once you have connected, you'll automatically login.

If you already had an OpenVPN config and wanted to connect to PIA, simply go to this site and download this OpenVPN client configuration. Edit the above config file again so it matches your actual setup, and modify it. You don't need the "user, pass" settings at the end of the file, and the first 4 or 5 lines you don't need to do anything with (they're just the network name and server to log into, but you're modifying the ones below that) The user must be in the sudoers file or be given privileges by another user, etc.

If you only have 1 user on the local network use the following: . Nobootuser. Passwd. The only line you actually need to modify is the one starting with auth (I didn't modify any of the rest, only the two you see). The important bit is auth-user-pass. Change that to pia.

This isn't the recommended setting to use by an official PIA guide, but if you wanted to connect to the PIA site using only your own laptop, a firewall issue may need to be fixed first. If you don't have a public IP address, here's how to temporarily fix this: Make an iptables rule that will allow UDP traffic on port 1701. This is a common port the PIA web server uses, so it doesn't look as suspicious.

Does OpenVPN allow port forwarding?

I have an OpenVPN connection to my server.

When I use port forwarding on my router to the VPN server, I don't see any forwarded traffic.

Port forwarding works by directing the traffic to a specific port on a specific IP. In order for OpenVPN to use port forwarding, it must be configured to use a tun device. You should be able to check your current configuration with the following command:
Sudo openvpn --daemon --verb 3 -v --config /etc/openvpn/server.conf You can also check with the following command to make sure that your config file is correct: The output of the above command will look like this: Sun Nov 6 22:26:21 2025 OpenVPN 2.gnupg/openvpn/test.

What is the best port for PIA VPN?

The reason I'm asking is because I'm using an IPad, and the PIA VPN client doesn't offer a selection of ports.

If I try to get away from using an IPv4 only connection, which port should I use? You can either try out a number of VPN ports as they come up (try them one at a time), or you could look at some of the VPN routers that are made specifically for use with PIA VPN. I have personally found the Cisco ASA firewall and the VyprVPN routers quite helpful with PIA VPN.

Does PIA VPN support port forwarding?

I mean can you forward the port of an existing connection using your VPN to an internal IP address?

I think one of the things that makes PIA vs. OpenVPN so valuable is how many protocols they support.

I asked their customer service people about this a while ago and they basically said, yeah, we'd probably be able to do it, but we don't offer it, because it's not a primary thing for us to support. I suppose it depends on the application, but it sounds like port forwarding is not something they actively provide. (I can't remember off the top of my head what protocol they use)

I've also heard of a very few providers that claim to be able to do port forwarding. It's not the norm (and I haven't found a single one that actually does this). They can't do it any more than they can give you a copy of your own source code.

The way OpenVPN works is like this: PIA gives the user an address for the tunnel server (the VPN gateway/router). OpenVPN has the client request access to the gateway, which then tells it where to connect. The tunnel server listens to both ends of the tunnel and passes the packets along. My PIA service was working fine until a couple weeks ago when I noticed that I couldn't open any other applications on my computer. When I attempted to open up Firefox, Skype or a terminal emulator, the computer would automatically drop me off at the login screen. I couldn't open anything on the computer.

I uninstalled PIA with Symantec's LiveUpdate tool and I had to reinstall it from scratch. All the services were restored (ie my email, Facebook, Dropbox and other things were all intact). When I attempted to access my machine, however, I would receive the following error:

Cannot connect. The network settings for the device cannot be detected on this machine.

To start, that means I can't connect to the Internet through my WAN IP address. My LAN IP address is okay. Next, I tried logging into my router via SSH. To do this, I had to have PIA installed. Now when I attempt to log into my router via SSH, I'm greeted by the following error message:

An unexpected server response was received during connection negotiation.
