Many people who use VPNs for internet privacy are aware that all of the free ones they've tried have some sort of catch. In this list, I've sorted the VPNs by speed. You can see that Free VPN1 is the best performer. It's a little slower than the others, but it still gets me around 90Mbps, which is good enough for basic web browsing. That's what I wanted - a VPN that was fast enough to use while on public WiFi.

Next I went to the website where the VPNs' servers are listed, and I tried to connect to each server. As with the last time I tested, I found that I wasn't able to connect to some of the servers, while other servers were too slow. Here are my results from this part of the test:

Does incognito mode hide your IP?

I'm using a proxy server and it doesn't appear that incognito mode hides my IP address.

You might try using the tor browser bundle, however, since it will route all of your traffic through the tor network, it's usually safer than a normal browser. You can also configure it to avoid revealing your IP address. It will take some time and setup, however, and so I would only recommend it as a temporary measure, to browse privately for a short time.

VPNs are another method for browsing safely and privately. While VPNs are less secure than Tor, they are much more flexible. They're most useful if you frequently browse privately (eg online banking) or on certain networks that restrict what you can do (eg school). You'll need to do some research and set up a suitable VPN, but they're worth a try.
