How big do white camellias get?
Question.
I've got a couple of 6" plants in the ground, and they're doing just fine. Should I plant some more? I think that's what they are called (camellia?), and they are in a pot with a saucer-like drain hole. They're growing along the back wall of my house, so they get lots of shade and light. They're just showing their white buds right now, but as they grow, I'm assuming they'll go all the way through to their full bloom size.
Answer. Well, the size that a camellia should reach is up to you. My experience has been to not give them too much space. So if they are growing in pots, you can go no bigger than about 8" diameter for a 12" tall plant.
Your plant looks really good. It's not hard to tell by looking at the flowers that you are not giving it enough room. My guess is that you could plant another one next to it if you are using the pot to keep it from growing out of control. If you are going to leave it outside you need to make sure to stake it when it gets taller and has a chance to get over-wound. It might want to start going up again after a year or two. If you are going to buy new plants you might want to look into the "baby" camellias. They are not mature when they are bought but they will bloom as normal. They don't need as much room as full-grown ones and they are a lot easier to care for.
It is an odd plant. The roots grow in a vertical fashion, but the flowers grow sideways. The whole plant is very tall. It's a pretty plant, but because it grows so tall, it will need a lot of space if you want to give it the best environment.
The best thing to do is plant more. You might want to remove the other one and put it in a spot where it doesn't have any competition. If you want to be a little bolder you could try a dwarf variety. They are very small plants, about 2 to 4 inches tall, which means you can plant them right next to the large one and not make them too tall.
You can tell by looking at the bottom of the stem that your plant is still young.
Where do camellias grow best?
In Southern California, Camellia japonica 'The Bride' comes to mind as the best camellia.
Although there are many great camellias, I've never seen one that compares to 'The Bride.'
A few years ago, my friend, Karen, visited me in southern California and brought me a beautiful camellia she'd picked up at the local nursery. As we drove home, I mentioned to Karen that 'The Bride' had just come into bloom and she was excited about the possibility of an early bloom. When we pulled into the driveway, however, I saw that the blooms were pale yellow, with no fragrance, and the leaves were dull and drooping. I remember looking at Karen in shock as I said, I don't think this is 'The Bride.' She replied, Yes it is! The leaves have always looked like that, but it has never bloomed before. I'm not sure if the camellia was damaged by the winter or had been growing in a very cold area, but when went inside, I told Karen that I would take care of it, and when it bloomed, we would celebrate.
Weeks later, I was watching TV and saw a news story on a newly discovered species of camellia. The reporter said that the tree's deep green leaves were covered with white spots, and that the blossoms were a brilliant white with no fragrance. I said, That sounds like 'The Bride.' Karen said, No!

Do camellias like full sun or shade?
It's really difficult because we want to put them in full sun all year round.
But we also realize that there's such a small growing season in the area where they're produced that it's not practical to plant them in full sun, so for the past three years now, we've experimented with different types of shade in summer. In that area, we planted it in a spot that's in an area that gets six hours of shade with five hours of no direct sunlight. It's very hard to get rid of the water.
So, what have you learned? I'll be honest, I am not yet convinced that the plants will do well on this new soil, but I love how hardworking these little guys are. The way they keep working and producing flowers after producing flower has convinced me that these little dudes love to work and are just amazing at making sure they have food to eat so they can keep their lovely heads and beautiful flowers! They are definitely the best performers I've ever worked with.
