FireStick users - should they all have a VPN?

If so, how do they connect? My home wireless network is very complex. So if I add a VPN to my network, do I get access via the FireStick IP address on the LAN, or via the VPN IP address and the FireStick acting as a router? If that makes sense. Thanks.

If you are using a wifi router then it makes it difficult for the firestick to access it. You can get vpn dongle such as tplink wdv200 or googles dongle with the openvpn software package but I personally would not use a firestick just as a modem instead of use a wifi router. A router is there for internet conectivity no reason to turn it into a router. There is no need to forward ports if you do not want to connect to services on the internet.

If you use a vpn with a network with wifi in house you will not be able to access wifi from outside your house due to all incoming connections being blocked. But as long as a VPN service is what you are after then yes you can go for it as much as you are not using the firestick for other things eg streaming media. My advice is use a dongle device. Firestick are really simple devices with good reputations however they are best used for streaming media so not much else.

I've never had a problem with a Roku so I haven't seen the need for a VPN on it. Good to hear your view, my wife uses a roku, as it's a nice way to switch channels. However it doesn't play back live streams for live sports (yet) and the lack of channel support in my area makes some shows very inconvenient to watch. I don't really have time to look into alternatives before football season though.

Roku also can't act as a wifi hotspot since wifi needs an IP address. My old roku would connect fine to my wifi network but it could not pass through the firewall and did not give a gateway ip.

As another poster stated, the issue is using a roku or firestick to forward your internet traffic. In that case, a vpn is more appropriate.
