What is the simple definition of marketing?
It is the art of making your consumers want what you sell.
While this may sound obvious, in reality its all too easy for companies to assume that their own products and services are better than their competitors, so they lose interest in their potential clients in a race to beat the other guy to the punch. Marketing is about finding new ways to connect with your audience. There has to be a reason why they are connected with your brand, product or service.
In the next seven articles in this series we'll explore the psychology of the consumer. While this doesn't always apply to every situation (there are lots of reasons your car might crash!), it will help you understand what's behind your consumers' decisions. These ideas will help you in situations where your client's are looking for information, but you don't know exactly how much they need. You can either ask them to tell you (This is what our marketing is going to do), or try putting yourself in their shoes and determining what information you would need to change your buying habits.
This article continues with some thoughts about the psychology of decision-making and then the focus shifts to learning how our brains learn. Decision Making. Decision making has been studied by several fields, including behavioural economics and neuroscience. As we start to learn about the brain and how it learns, we can begin to see why some marketing messages have such a huge impact on the buying habits of consumers. In other words, even when there isn't much of a difference in price, your customers may be willing to pay more when they get something they value more. So, lets look at the factors that affect decision making in a variety of scenarios.
Pricing. Our brains don't care about price if they value the product. It will matter if the product was expensive, or if our budget was already tight or if we are shopping and not thinking. If we are buying a pair of leggings from Zara versus Victoria's Secret, we know the choice is not based on the dollar amount. However, we do know that they will both be pretty damn comfortable in our sizes!
What is the purpose of marketing?
At a very basic level, the purpose of marketing is to increase awareness of your business.
To expand your customer base and develop a loyal following. To capture the attention of people who are ready, willing and able to become customers. This will lead to sales, and sales.
At a slightly more sophisticated level, the purpose of marketing is to: Make your website traffic rise. Get more followers. Get more clients. Generate more leads for phone calls. Let's explore this concept by looking at our example company, Acme, Inc., of Los Angeles. At a bare minimum, your company's goal should be to increase awareness of your product or service.
With Acme, our goal has changed over time. Initially, the company had an extremely niche strategy to gain exposure. It targeted wealthy, well-educated men and women in a specific age demographic. Their products were highly exclusive - only 10% of American teenagers could afford one of their shoes, but it still proved to be an effective strategy.
The company grew their customer base rapidly and was profitable within five years. After that, the company began expanding its marketing initiatives into other states and internationally. They have now expanded to target a range of customers with different lifestyles, attitudes, needs and interests.
You can use the following model for your marketing plan to help you determine how much of your time to allocate to each individual campaign. Here we go. Choose one campaign. Marketing campaign: Why do we want to run it? To grow awareness, expand the customer base or generate new leads. To increase a key metric such as revenue or volume of customers.
How long is it likely to take? It might be weeks, months, or years. How much of my time will I have to allocate? This could change depending on your stage and situation. In the case of Acme, even though they had high brand awareness, they still spent 30% of their marketing budget running ads to ensure that new people heard about them. When your company is small or brand is relatively unknown, this is certainly possible. Later in the planning process, when you need to ramp up to achieve greater growth, this may be a struggle.

This is the second in a series on a lot of questions people often ask when they start selling on Amazon. We have talked about how to set up your Amazon FBA business, and we also gave you a basic overview on building your e-commerce website (for those interested in selling their own brand products through Amazon). After writing this post, we'd be happy to review it. If you have comments or ideas to share, please let us know! And, thanks for reading! What are the 4 Basics of Marketing? Marketing is the science of spreading word of your product to more people. But what exactly does that mean? Marketing includes: Selling something (or everything!) online, using the internet (including social media and search engines), and by phone or any other means. Including your products in sales, discounts, promotions, advertising (like radio or print) and whatever else feels right, is the core of effective marketing. Any of these can have good or bad results. However, doing any one of them as a major part of your Amazon FBA business is a sure way to waste your time. (There are lots of examples of people spending loads of money on advertising and it usually doesn't work, but that doesn't mean you don't still try, only in more creative ways.)
Most of this post will focus on the 'online' side of things. I am including information on how to do the other 3 areas below.
How many different ways are there to go about selling things online? There is a plethora of ways to go about it, and it all depends on what you prefer. For example, Facebook ads allow you to promote an image with text you give them. Text is much simpler than image, so that's the best type to advertise. You also have plenty of options with things like the Amazon affiliate program, which involves affiliate links. There are also more specific products like WooCommerce. That's a more popular paid solution. We have covered affiliate marketing above (and some great free ones for building your list and promoting products), but here are a few great posts if you want to go deeper on the subject.
So, there's some general tips to consider when you are looking for a solution.
