Why is NordVPN not working on Android Netflix?
We have been having problems with Android devices accessing Netflix over NordVPN on our servers, which doesn't affect iOS users.
This isn't something new; in fact, we've been seeing issues with Android devices since before Android 7.0 Nougat was released. It's become more prevalent recently and our engineers have been working to resolve the issue.
We're happy to say that we have resolved this issue. With Android Netflix access on NordVPN now works as it did when we first launched it last summer. The way it works is fairly simple, which will hopefully help with understanding why Android users had problems in the first place.
Android's OpenVPN implementation for the Netflix app is done by a third-party Android library called OpenVPN Java API. Our developers worked with that library and other libraries and figured out how it should work in order to meet Netflix requirements. A lot of work went into testing these libraries and figuring out the Netflix API, but ultimately, we didn't see the correct behavior from these libraries and found out about their issues. We worked with these libraries to get the bugs fixed, but unfortunately, they weren't able to fix all of them.
Why are there still issues with Android? One of the biggest issues was not being able to properly authenticate Android devices. The libraries were using don't provide that functionality and the app doesn't implement it properly. These libraries have their own authentication implementations, but they aren't compatible with the API required by Netflix. The developers are aware of the incompatibility, but the issue with the implementation has prevented it from being fixed.
OpenVPN does provide a way to automatically authenticate itself to the server; however, Netflix requires a manual connection on the device. We've tried getting Netflix to accept a certificate through OpenVPN, but they still require you to manually connect. That's the biggest reason that the libraries could not provide a proper Netflix experience.
The problem doesn't seem to be with the libraries; in fact, the libraries were able to be used for a long time without any major issues. The Android developers have made it so that OpenVPN connects automatically, but Netflix still requires manual connection. Therefore, there's no way for OpenVPN to authenticate to Netflix.
Does NordVPN no longer work with Netflix?
When we originally reviewed NordVPN, we gave it 4 out of 5 stars, and praised it for its easy setup and strong security.
And if you're interested in a VPN that lets you access Netflix without having to use a browser extension, we didn't give it anything less than a perfect rating of 5 out of 5 stars.
The reason is simple: NordVPN supports DNS-over-TLS encryption, which allows your ISP to see what sites you're accessing, but makes the content itself invisible. That means you can enjoy a virtual private network without fear of being tracked or snooped on by the internet service provider.
And while NordVPN does not encrypt your data, the VPN has excellent server and customer support, and an easy-to-use client. Plus, we like that NordVPN doesn't store your user information and passwords on their servers it only stores them in encrypted form on your device.
But with more and more people getting their data stolen from VPN providers, there's now a growing number of users who need to access the web using a virtual private network, but have to do so without using a VPN. And so, we wanted to check up on NordVPN to see if the VPN still works with Netflix, to find out if you can access Netflix from inside a virtual private network (and why it might not work). So, here's our review of NordVPN. But before you read on, it's important to note that NordVPN is still a great virtual private network, but it is no longer optimized for Netflix.
That said, if you're looking for a virtual private network to watch Netflix from anywhere in the world, even if you're in an area where Netflix is censored, then NordVPN is still one of the best options around. NordVPN: What Is It? NordVPN is a virtual private network, and as you might expect, it gives you the ability to browse the web and access any sites you want without fear of being tracked, or having your data intercepted by the people around you. You'll also be protected from censorship and other forms of internet snooping, as well as from hackers who might try to steal your data.
Why is Netflix rejecting my VPN?
We have received multiple reports of people being blocked from accessing Netflix or having a reduced connection when using VPN.
The reason for this is that we are using IP addresses for our connection to Netflix which is not compatible with the way Netflix accesses your internet connection. We have added some more IP addresses to our VPN in order to try and work around this, but this isn't perfect and some people are still being blocked from accessing the service. If you are using a VPN we recommend you switch to a proxy or to one of our standard IP addresses which are compatible. I can't get the video playback to start on my tablet when I connect with a VPN. In most cases if you are trying to watch videos on your iPad when connected to a VPN your device will simply stall when it should be playing the video. This is due to the fact that when you connect to the VPN the iPad actually creates a new network connection which will be in use by the VPN. You then have two connections to use so the video playback will pause until you disconnect and reconnect. The best way to avoid this is to leave the VPN connection turned off. If you want to watch videos on your iPad you will need to make sure that you are connecting to a VPN which has either an appropriate connection type or an acceptable IP address to be able to stream the video.
