How do I become a videogame tester with no experience?
It's actually quite simple.
Go to Test my game! Select "Videogame" from the list of genres. Pick any genre that interests you, and play the game for 5-10 minutes to get a feel for it. If you enjoy it, go to step 3. That's it. You can then proceed to ask questions on Game Jolt, Game Dev Alpha, etc. To try to get a feel for the community and what questions other people have about your game.
As far as the experience aspect, you should be able to find at least one tester who is willing to help you out, and they will be the first to test your game. I'm an amateur programmer who's just starting to get into the testing side of things. I just finished my first game and I was wondering how I could get into the videogame testing world.
The best way I know of is to go to a local game developers' association and see if there's a "testers" group or something. Usually this will mean that you have to pay, but you'll also be able to talk to people and find out what they're looking for in testers.
I did this, and I found out that I'm not really needed in testing (aside from being able to test a game at its completion). I'm mainly there for feedback on my programming. It's good to know that others like it because you can build off their comments.
Ask your friends. This is the most likely route that you'll take. There is a big advantage to this, and that is the friends you talk to are likely to be very honest with you.
When I first started making games, I had a friend who helped me by doing a lot of the testing for me. It's really a great way to find out what works and what doesn't work for other people.
How do you become a qualified game tester?
You either have it in you or you're working towards it.
In order to become a competent game tester there are two types of players you can play: a 'tester', and a 'player'. Testers tend to be more focused on their own performance, while players want to enjoy the process of development. This article hopes to make the transition from a player to a tester much easier by providing a few tips to get you started.
Before we get into this, let's take a look at the two stages of play: becoming a player, and learning to code. It's important to note that if you code already you are already a player. When a new team sees a developer with game skills they tend to ask how he's going to test, not, how did he code that? In other words, a lot of game developers out there are already players by default.
Player's Rules. Players don't worry about things like deadlines or budgets, they just give their all, and do the best job they can do within the resources they have. I'd rather play with a player than a tester because a tester's time is usually dictated by an agenda (deadline, release date, budget etc.) While many testers would rather give their all anyway, players get to choose their level of dedication, they can work with the developers around them, and they don't have to answer to anyone.
That being said, let's look at some of the skills/knowledge/techniques of the game tester and see how they transfer over to the coding process. The Tester's Role. When someone comes to us with a bug report they don't expect us to fix it on the spot. That's why most of our responses will be, what you tried, what didn't happen or give me your game/site URL and can you provide a screenshot? As a tester, you will need to know where the problem comes from, understand the context of the player's actions, and know the exact steps the player took to produce the bug.
What is the lowest salary for a game tester?
As a general rule, the lowest salary for a game tester is the same as the highest salary for an employee in any other role.
However, this will vary from employer to employer, and there are usually exceptions to this.
I work as a full time tester for a publisher of PC games in Europe. Salary: 35k EUR per year. The most annoying part is that we get paid twice a month, and you can be expected to work on your holidays (sometimes).
