Can anyone go to audio described theatre?
Does anyone go?
Do you find the experience more or less frustrating than normal cinemas? What are the benefits of being part of this wonderful community? I am interested to hear from anyone who has participated, or can relate their experiences.
Re: Any Audiodescribed theatre goers here? Theatre is in a totally different world. The sound is very subtle, and your vision/hearing experience is important. For that reason, people with some form of impairment are advised not to go. I always feel frustrated at a film, as I can't get the impact of dialogue if I'm on an armchair, with earphones, in the middle of the row of seats. I feel even worse, listening to a film with my ears muffled and the noise of the crowd in my head. I never enjoy going to the cinema; I really don't know how it could be any different for others.
(I'd like to know if the above two statements can be attributed to a "lack of confidence"? ). Thank you all for your comments and information on this very interesting topic. Mick - thanks for sharing your impressions of theatre experience! I think that what the forum needs more than anything else is exposure. We need to get our experience of these unique theatrical settings talked about on other forums such as the 'Audiophile' Community. I think there is an awful lot to be said for the way of theatre. Not just for us older guys who are comfortable in our armchairs, but also for the young people and families who can't sit comfortably for a whole film or listen to the soundtrack on their computer (which means no iPod!) because they have disabilities. I don't believe that theatre is 'impossible' for anyone. There are several theatres around London that are disabled friendly and I would recommend them to anyone with a disability or a loved one with a disability. For example, the Royal National Theatre run a programme called 'Cinema in the Round' which includes regular screenings in their main theatre and also access seating. This is a very 'in your face' kind of accessibility. However, I know that it isn't for everyone. I believe it is important to challenge the 'idea' of theatre. It is a completely different medium.
