I've noticed that the rate at which messages are being forwarded to the next level has increased recently. While I'm sure my spam filter works, it's still a major concern of mine. by most people?
What you might be seeing is someone forwarding their own email as though it is from some sort of "official" source. Spam messages can look just like "normal" messages, only they're not; they contain various forms of advertisements, or, even, if they're being sent from some virus-ridden or unstable system, maybe from some criminal organization. It takes more than just a spam filter to reduce a spam-sending network to zero, though. Some basic security measures will help, as will good configuration, such as a properly functioning failover system; but a competent network administrator must also take steps to prevent the spammers from simply sending email out from his server and having the recipient think it's an official message.
The reason I asked is because I have a site that is being hit with spam, and I do have a spam filter set up. I still get many SPAM emails on a daily basis. And those are mostly from spoofed addresses/accounts.
I suspect it's not a matter of users (or even admins) being lazy (we get a huge amount of spam in my system, after all), but rather that it's a lot easier to get a ton of addresses of non-malicious users and sell them in bulk to the spammer(s). It would be relatively easy to identify a valid domain and use that to spoof any other email; there's a few hundred thousand of them out there and most have been compromised. The way to stop it is to prevent the spammer(s) from being able to spam as much. They'll either find another method to do it (probably a more targeted attack), or they'll just spam from a random IP address and not care what the replies from the recipients get - that's the main problem with this attack.
What is the difference between HTTP and SMTP?
The standard says you should use SMTP when the messages are intended for multiple users (or multiple email addresses) simultaneously. The sender and/or recipient are not necessarily known in advance. This means that it is more flexible than HTTP, which is normally appropriate when one person is sending multiple messages to one or many recipients. That's because the messages may or may not be resent. Also, this method is meant to transfer multiple text (and optionally binary data) messages to several users simultaneously. As such it is more complex than standard HTTP.
In short, there is more going on when you use SMTP and/or SMPT than HTTP and there is a reason to not use HTTP.
