Is Squid proxy safe?

I had a server hosted in India with the ip address of 10.

1 and the url of xyz. Then it got shut down so I was searching for a new hosting solution and after looking around and testing different servers I found a cheap VPS solution from cloudfogger where I could get a dedicated IP that is 10.1 so in order to test if the server is safe with regards to its privacy I configured it as a squid proxy and I have been able to make a secure private web browser using TOR for that reason I asked the following question.

The problem is that the IP address of my proxy server is a public one and it's not safe at all as someone could easily see which pages are being requested and even try to find out your IP address and try to figure out the source site you are trying to access when all you are trying to do is see a secure resource like an email. But when I use TOR it asks for a new IP everytime but that IP would be on a private IP address range right? So i'm not sure how safe or unsafe is the squid proxy when it comes to privacy and accessing private websites. Can anyone answer that for me? The question is can TOR be used safely and securely for a proxy? I think there will be a risk using any proxy software. To me, this question applies to TOR itself. TOR does use a "privacy enhancing" proxy. But that proxy may be the weakest link in the chain. Any application used behind a proxy has exactly that possibility that someone could find out who/where it is connected to/from. In fact, that is essentially what is happening when you are using a proxy.

Is SOCKS5 proxy safe?

I'm making sure for my website if it can be hacked or not.

I'm using SOCKS5 proxy and I wonder why should it be hacked. It works in a very strange way.

Example: I'm surfing in Chrome while the server is serving with nginx (1.8.1).

On my client PC, I add the server in nginx' proxy.ini file as following : And now I try to connect to one of the domains I own. Then, I get to see the domain name that I'm supposed to get on Google but my browser gets to connect and then I get a "Network Error".

If the proxy was working just fine, then why did it stop working

Should it even work or not

Is the proxy somehow vulnerable

Thanks :). PS : If possible, I would like to have answer with a link to an "official" website where they mention "it's safe" as you would see from wikipedia or similar. While it is perfectly OK for your web browser to talk to other programs through a proxy, and while it is also perfectly OK for an application written by some other company to use a proxy at one point or another, SOCKS, as the name suggests, is about securing traffic. In all of these cases, a user of that program wants to be shielded from other people on the network who are listening to network traffic. In this particular case, SOCKS protects a browser from sending its cookie information directly back to a malicious server. In other words, SOCKS makes your browser think it has visited a malicious server before, so that in the future, the request is rejected if the user happens to visit that malicious server once more.

Does squid support SOCKS proxy?

Squid was never designed to be a SOCKS proxy.

I mean you can write a SOCKS proxy for Squid just like for any other HTTP proxy, but that isn't the main feature Squid was made for. Squid is an HTTP proxy, its main job is to transparently relay requests to one or more backend servers.

And there's no need to implement a SOCKS proxy in front of Squid, Squid handles all authentication and authorization needs in the server configuration (and Squid's configuration is well documented). It's also not a security risk as Squid handles TLS encryption in the server configuration.
