The most viewed films list will count the top 10,000 or so films, and is the result of a collaboration between us, our friends at IMDB, and FilmStarts.

What's the best film you have ever seen?

There are many great movies, of course.

I will nominate some of my favorites here. They are all great, but you may have your own favorites. Some of these films may be old and some of these may be new. And it's important to realize that my favorite film is not necessarily yours. For the record, mine is "The Third Man." My second choice would be "Citizen Kane." I think the line in that film "I've had my ups and downs, but they're mostly downs" gets to the heart of everything. My third choice is "The Maltese Falcon." It's not one of my favorites, but I love it.

If you're going to get the most from a movie, you have to make a conscious effort to see it as a complete and interesting whole. This is harder than you might think. Movies tend to be made up of little fragments that don't seem to go together, but if you look closely you'll find that the parts fit perfectly into the whole. To get the most out of your movie watching, you have to be willing to look for the way the different elements fit together.

But what makes a good movie? What makes a great movie? It's a question without answer. I was once asked this question, and my answer was that there are three qualities that make for a good movie. A good movie has:

A story. This means that all of the different elements are in order, and they all hang together.

Characters. You need interesting characters who live and grow.

Directing. The director must keep the film moving forward.

The first two qualities are self explanatory. But what about directing? How do you tell a story well? How do you use every moment and keep the film moving forward? Directing is different from writing. In film, we can tell the story in different ways. We can start on a large scale and show how things unfold. Or we can zoom in and focus on a single event. We can show a character's history. Or we can watch a character go through a short arc. We can follow a character over a long period of time. And we can do all of these things at once. It's very hard to explain the difference between directing and writing. That's why I'm not going to try.

Tragedy? We want to have the best education system in the world. What is the greatest national crisis? We want to make sure our government works for the American people and our interests, not for special interests. What is the greatest contribution of the U.S. To the world?

We are the strongest advocate of freedom in the world. What is the greatest threat to America? We want to have the best healthcare system in the world. What is the great opportunity? What is the greatest concern of the American people? Who is the most respected person in the United States? What is the greatest blessing of the American people? What is the greatest opportunity?

What's a movie everyone knows?

With the help of some very clever folks at The Guardian, I've identified this year's "everyone knows" movie.

The answer: This is almost certainly the wrong list. It may well be the same for some of you. For others, I'm sure you can name even more. But as with every category on this site, it does prove useful to think a bit about the kinds of movie you might get from these choices. These are the movies that everyone knows, and it's a pretty exclusive club. Even if you're among its members, these are movies most people would have no trouble guessing are in the club.

"WALL-E" (2008). A family that loves to build. A robot who is loved by its owner. A world that gets smaller. A human that doesn't know how dangerous it really is.

I thought I was going to be a little more open-minded when I started this, but this movie came out in 2025, and it still hasn't been released on DVD yet. Which means it won't be considered. Unless somebody else decides to release it on DVD or Amazon.

"BEAUTY AND THE BEAST" (1991). There is no other version. There is no other Disney film better known than this one. There is no other Disney movie people refer to immediately when it comes up. You know this. I know this.

What can I tell you about it? It's a classic. It's not a bad film. It's an entertaining one. It's a great song-to-movie match. It has its flaws, but you can never hate it because it's just such a good film. I'm sure this will be easy enough for you.

The only thing I could add is: it's a huge success on repeat. When "Beauty and the Beast" was re-released on DVD back in 2025, it sold six million copies across all formats. Not sure why this doesn't happen more often.

"SPICE WORLD" (2009). I think this'll go easy for most people. It's got a pretty good concept, it's got well-known characters, and it seems to be very well-liked. "Spice World" also has something that's different for Disney.
