And can I trust the reliability. I've used (or used to use) the Windows version of FortiClient for about 8 months now. I've also experimented with all the other "free" VPN services out there, and by far the best one for me was FortiClient, but now that I've paid I won't recommend any for-pay version any more.

It's worth noting that the Windows (and Mac/Linux) versions are not free as in open-source - you have to pay for a license for each device. It also works great in WOW64 mode, on Windows XP SP3 x64 machines as well as Vista x64, which has always been nice, although maybe it could do better, personally. There is some (slow) performance to the service, which tends to bog down your connection - but it's a free download and the trade-off of slow speed for the ability to run and run seems to make it worthwhile for us.

I've also heard good things about AirVPN's products - but I couldn't find any direct comparison with any of the other alternatives out there, so I can't give it any recommendation as to whether they would be worth the money (and also I can't stand any kind of adware, so this was a factor for me). For reference, their products are: AirVPN Free for 30 days. After that I believe you're free, but the price may be higher.

AirVPN Basic - I don't think I had any problems with this, though I didn't use it long enough to get to know it very well.

How do I get FortiClient VPN to work?

It can be used in addition to a regular OpenVPN server setup. This solution is useful if you have a customer who uses an existing OpenVPN server configuration and wish to add the FortiClient function.

What is needed for FortiClient VPN? First of all, you need at least two servers: one OpenVPN server that provides the tun access to the internet and another server that performs the IPSec tunneling using your OpenVPN client's IP address as the destination endpoint. When it comes to OpenVPN on the VPN gateway, you should set a static address, because if the address changes, all tun clients will lose their connectivity. Note that FortiClient is a VPN technology built on top of IPSec. Why do I need two servers? In FortiClient, the encryption process starts on the gateway where IPSec is performed and ends up at the client. At any given moment, the gateway only sends traffic to the client; any return traffic is sent directly back to the gateway from where it is forwarded over the IPSec tunnel. That's why the gateway server shouldn't change. But there are several scenarios where it's handy to host the gateway on a dedicated server. We offer two choices:

You can use one VPN server with two OpenVPN tunnels. It's often done in organizations as a cheap method of providing VPN services. The concept allows you to build an OpenVPN client for each employee or group, and all those tunnels will sit and wait until it's their turn to perform IPSec.

It's not exactly what we recommend, as it limits the number of concurrent connections to the internet to 50-75, which is not enough. With the TUNGate virtual appliance, it's not a problem as all tunneling is done in parallel and you can start as many instances as you want. You get one IP address and can easily scale if you want to provide VPN services to a larger group.
