What kind of VPN is FortiClient?
FortiClient is an enterprise-grade, firewall-based Virtual Private Network solution, offering both client-side (client-based VPN) and server-side (server-based VPN) capabilities. FortiClient's robust set of features make it perfect for businesses that need to connect geographically diverse locations while ensuring security and performance.
FortiClient is the only firewall-based solution that combines client-based and server-based VPNs. The client-based VPN tunneling technology is built into the firewall, ensuring that you never have to run client software or install a client application on a computer. Clients can be any type of client - a mobile phone, a tablet, a personal computer, or a virtual desktop - and can be used to access resources in the network by securely sending the information over the firewall tunnel.
The following questions explain what kind of VPN FortiClient offers and help you determine if it is the best VPN for your business. How do I use FortiClient as a client-based VPN? Using a client-based VPN is easy. Simply select the FortiClient VPN client on a client device, authenticate it, and connect. Because the client VPN is encrypted, the network traffic is protected from hackers or others who might try to intercept your data.
How do I use FortiClient as a server-based VPN? Server-based VPNs are useful when you have multiple devices that need to connect to the network and want to create secure and private connections between them. When you first install FortiClient, the firewall will automatically generate a set of OpenVPN tunnels. This process establishes a secure connection between the FortiClient firewalls and a remote FortiClient VPN endpoint - allowing your clients to connect to remote sites through your firewall-based VPN solution.
FortiClient Enterprise gives you the flexibility to create multiple remote endpoints to connect to and manage endpoints centrally from the main FortiClient firewall location. These remote endpoints are known as Remote Access VPNs and provide dedicated, secure connections to remote offices or other sites.
Remote Access VPNs can be used to connect to remote sites or sites that do not have dedicated IPSec VPN service but need to have access to remote resources within your network.
Is FortiClient VPN free?
I've been using a free version of FortiClient VPN for several years now.
I'm looking to upgrade, but I can't find any information on whether the free version is still free or whether it's becoming paid. I've found no one that can tell me - only that it's not free anymore. I just can't find any reference to that in their site or other articles.
Anyone out there using it? Any information on how it works and what they charge for? I think it's still free for personal use but I wouldn't rely on it if you need a dependable VPN, and I do not recommend it for business use unless you are willing to pay. I've had a lot of problems with it over the years and it's always been a bit flaky at best. The client is basically a glorified browser so it's a bit slow and clunky. Their "free" plan is about as good as free coffee - you get what you pay for. It's pretty solid and very easy to set up.
It's free for non commercial use. I've used it for some time and it's been very good, I just haven't had any need for it since I started using a VPN service with a built in firewall. I'd be interested to hear what kind of services you are interested in or want to offer.
This is a really strange statement given that it is a stand alone client and runs on Windows, MacOS, Linux and iOS, all of which have full browsers. I would say that the client has the exact same functionality as other client apps including browser plugins.
My understanding of the client is that it acts as an interface for the VPN server, allowing you to use the VPN server's connection to the internet without having to manually set up port forwarding and tunneling etc. It is an important part of the VPN service and was always advertised as such.
I am currently using the free version of forticlient on a mac. There are some things that bug me but its not bad. I did manage to get it working on my iPhone and iPad without paying, it was a pain but I got it to work.
