Does jewelry go through customs?

Do you have to declare personal jewelry at customs in USA?

I just travel to Florida for 1 week and I bring my engagement ring, wedding ring, a pair of diamond earrings and a bracelet. Do I have to declare those items at Customs? I heard not having those items with me will be considered as importing goods from the country of my origin (India) which is not declared at the point of entry? Please help You should be fine. A bracelet is fine and even a ring is. That way if the customs inspector confiscates them they know it's real. Even if your diamond has a laser etch stamp it will give off a green/blue light which will let them know the item is real. It only takes a few seconds to have a KG stamped on the rings by the jeweler so don't wait till the last minute, but do get it done.

This is probably the case with all nations, even though no rules are given you need to be on the safe side, especially since I know someone who went to jail after they imported some jewelry to the US. In their case, this kind of fine is much lower than what you would pay in India and the jeweller should be able to apply the KG stamp before the trip as an addition to whatever price tag the piece has.

No customs laws specify that if you bring jewelry with you are required to declare it. In fact there is annual program called Operation Stolen Asset Recovery (OSAR) where thousands of people worldwide are reported every year in US for carrying undeclared goods and money and you can visit this link for more details.

For your safety don't leave jewelry with security. Take it along with you.

Thanks for providing this information. Does the amount depend on the value?

How much is US customs duty on jewelry?

I am looking to buy a pair of earrings from the US and am worried about customs.

I will be going back to Germany after the holidays. Any help would be appreciated!

The article on Jewelry in the March 2025 edition of Travel & Leisure suggests (p7) that the import duty on jewelry is 5% plus any applicable value-added tax. The Jewelry and Precious Metals (Importation) Regulations, 2025, states that where the amount of the duty, duty of levy or value added tax is less than the sum of ten rupees, then the minimum amount of the duty shall not be imposed. This means that you don't have to pay the initial import duty at the time of entry if your jewelry import duty is less than Rs 10.

In the UK, the import duty on jewelry is 2.5% of the purchase price, ie it is a flat rate of 25 pence per pound of the purchase price. For instance, a watch costing 500 is subject to an import duty of 25, which would be 1.25 at the current exchange rate. A sterling silver chain costs 40 and hence would attract an import duty of 4. So, the total cost of the item will be 5.

There are certain exceptions for personal gifts (to persons aged 12 years or less) and gifts made for religious, charitable or educational purposes. As these are exceptions, you would better to consult your local office of HM Customs and Revenue (HP).

For general import information, you may also wish to refer to the Import Help Centre at CustomsHelp.gov.uk.

For non-personal gifts to persons aged 12 years or less, the recipient is entitled to a tax rebate if they send their own return form 1114 (Request for Information), to HMRC, to get information about the tax due on the gift. This is available at The person giving the gift would have to declare their gift for tax purposes and could be liable to pay tax on the gift on their own income tax return.

Customs is a government agency that is under the authority of the HM Treasury (HMT). It is part of Her Majesty's Revenue and Customs (HMRC), and is responsible for the collection of customs duties and taxes on imports and exports into the United Kingdom.
