How much can I import without paying duty?
I have recently discovered that I can import many items, such as clothing, without having to pay duty. The items have an RRP of around 300, so they are not really cheap but it is a good deal. However, I am not sure if there is a limit to the amount that I can import. Can you tell me what the limit is?
There is no limit on the amount of imported goods you can bring in duty free, as long as it's for your own personal use. If it's for resale you need to apply for and obtain a duty free permit for any goods above a certain value.
It's worth noting that in most EU countries the duty-free import of gifts or souvenirs (that is to say, items intended for personal consumption rather than for resale) does not attract any customs duties. See my answer here for details.
What is the duty-free allowance for flying to the US?
I'm going to be travelling to the US in February and I have an internal EU flight with a stopover in Switzerland.
What is the minimum distance requirement for flying from the EU to the US, as I will be exiting the EU through Zurich? The minimum distance for a free transatlantic flight is 3,300 km and the maximum distance for a free flight is 12,000 km. ? Thanks for the quick response. I'm wondering though, how it works for flights between the UK and other countries. I will be flying to Geneva (EU) from London Heathrow (UK). My flight is leaving Geneva at 9:55am and arriving in LHR at 5:20pm, so I have a stopover in Switzerland of 2.5 hours. Do I have to pay the 25 fee on the first leg or just the 15 fee for the second leg? I know it depends on how long the connection in Switzerland is, but this is a complicated case. I will be flying to Geneva (EU) from London Heathrow (UK).
