I don't know if the others have mentioned this already but they have a default time out of 180 seconds. It will disconnect from the initial connection in approximately that time period if no feedback is received. So, your VPN will be down. If you do have feedback it will be connected for about 180 seconds.

Openvpn is great, but has its faults. For one, it seems that you have to recompile it everytime you want to connect to a new location. And to get a client working on Mac OS X you have to modify the source code so that it works. However, now that I have an IPX device, it is far more convenient that using L2TP/IPSec.

In my opinion, PPTP is good for casual users, and you can set the timeout to 5 minutes or something, but if you are serious about your VPN then you should not be using it. If you are using openvpn, stick to the native linux builds, which I find work better on all of the platforms I've tried. Openvpn-native for osx does not work for me.

I actually got a bit further than that. The Mac version doesn't support IPv6 yet, so I had to compile one for myself. However, this version doesn't work well at all. It works, but you are never logged off. So if you start it up and it shows you connecting but not showing up in the network tray then you keep trying until you can not reconnect any more.

So that you know, I have two networks at home: LAN/WAN.

- Virtual Network (My private network). And I have configured a VPN on both of them, to connect these two networks. I don't care what we use PPTP or L2TP/SSTP as VPN protocols, because of those VPN protocols can provide a real security for me (for example if user connected to VPN server will be able to see and open the sensitive file on other computer of the network). Now as I want an online VPN service for my private network, I read several things online. And I'm confuse now what is the best for my needs.

Please help me, which protocol is better between PPTP, L2TP and SSTP protocol? Note : I don't want to pay monthly subscription of a particular VPN service. Because most of them give a free trial, only to make it hard when we are not satisfied.

Which is really strange, because if I'm not a customer of any VPN service I won't remember their registration process If you just want to access the computers at home from your work, there's absolutely no difference between the three. There's no practical difference between L2TP and PPTP, however most people using PPTP today are using it as part of a Cisco AnyConnect client. If you're doing this yourself (rather than subscribing to one of these products), this effectively eliminates the question since you're already using AnyConnect, so there's no need to worry about the details.
