What is the Affordable Connectivity Program ACP NYC?

What is the government program that gives you free internet?

Because, I'm getting a little bored with it.

I mean, all the people I talk to are talking about how awesome it is, but there's no one else. And then there's the part where you get it for free, which makes it hard to find someone to talk to.

The reason I wanted to go with the government program was because I figured that if it didn't work out then I could just go back to just having an Internet bill, but still get the free Internet. My dad got one for his office and a few people have it for their houses. None of us really use the internet though. If we do, we're on our own home connection and not sure what happens to it when we're not there.

I know a couple of people who get it from there. I'd imagine more would than we do.

My father gets a free Internet connection.

What is the free tablet program in NYC?

So, after a bit of time with my iPad1, I was able to make the full leap and try my iPad2 on the NYC subway. I'm actually a little jealous of some younger folks who didn't have this option until now. I had to sign for my new device on the spot as some of the first generation devices will lose track of one's ID number after five tries. Once done and signed in, the device could be switched on and off again. I was not asked any questions or for any sort of login credentials while it was working on the New York transit network.

The iPad2 appears to be a solid device and offers some nice new features. But, there are many more questions to be answered by a New York Transit Authority spokesperson and more tests can certainly be performed.

One of my favorite New York transit posters has disappeared from the subway walls though. The ad for a free New York Transit Authority tablet was taken down yesterday (Sunday, 10/26).

What is the Affordable Connectivity Program ACP NYC?

The program is designed to provide a bridge to the future, connecting communities to innovative new technologies, and empowering residents to participate in economic growth and social change.

By expanding broadband access, this program will help to create better opportunities for youth to get high school and college degrees, and make it easier for people to access government services, medical care, education and public safety. Through technology and innovation, the ACP NYC program will reduce health disparities, increase access to community resources and improve quality of life.

Why does the city need to expand broadband? With millions of residents living in homes that have no Internet access, our city is not connected to the digital economy. In fact, a recent report by the Center for an Urban Future found that nearly 50 percent of all New Yorkers don't have broadband access at home. New York is one of the only major cities in the U.S. Without an affordable and accessible broadband network. Broadband expansion will help to create better opportunities for youth to get high school and college degrees, and make it easier for people to access government services, medical care, education and public safety. It will also make it easier for local businesses to attract and retain talent, which will strengthen our city's economy.

How can I get involved? To be eligible for this funding, applicants must demonstrate need by describing a defined geographic area that is disconnected from a broadband network. The City will distribute funds through a competitive procurement process. This will include two regional service areas and up to ten service area awards. Applicants will have a chance to compete for their specific award in the second round of awards.

Where do I apply? You can learn more about this program at acp.nyc or by visiting the City's website.
