What is the difference between a VPN client and a VPN server?
A VPN (Virtual Private Network) is a network access method used to gain secure internet access by encrypting and/or modifying network traffic using the encryption key and the internet access provider's key. The client is what you would typically be using to connect to a network, while a VPN server is what is being accessed on a network. In other words, a VPN client would be a device connected to a network that would communicate with the server in order to make a secure connection and gain access to the internet. In a sense, a VPN server is what the client is using to connect to a network. The VPN server is then acting as a client to the internet. If you have a network, you have a VPN server.
A server usually has more than one connection to the internet, but it can be very hard to tell if that server is just connecting and disconnecting. VPN connections can be either "manual" or "auto". A "manual" VPN connection is a way for someone to create a connection between a client device and a server. A "manual" VPN connection allows the user to create an account, choose a location (country), and connect to a server within that country. On the other hand, an "auto" VPN connection is basically a connection that stays connected automatically and creates a VPN tunnel. This tunnel is usually automatic, meaning that no one needs to choose a location or make an account before connecting. When you're connected to an internet service provider, they control all of the ports that you use and what you do on your device. An "auto" VPN connection will always be able to protect your data. For instance, if you were to choose a non-secured wifi hotspot, your connection would not be protected at all.
So how do VPNs work? I'll go over how the whole process of setting up a VPN server works. VPN services usually include two things: A way to gain secure network access and a server that you can connect to gain secure access to the internet. To understand the first part, you need to think about networking in two different ways: Connecting to a network - this is when you're connected to a local network. For example, if you have a wifi hotspot at home, you're connected to a local network at home.
