How to set proxy settings in Linux?

How do I keep my proxy on?

I'm on a laptop, and I'd like to not have to plug it in every time.

Also, it would be nice to know which sites I'm blocking.
anyone know if I need to do anything with my router? so I can connect? kantxx if you're connecting from outside the local network, you need a public ip address. MonkeyDust: I got that. its internal to the network. im using 192.168.0.1
then you don't need a public IP. MonkeyDust: well yea. But how do I get one? what are some places I can look? I just need a place to put my proxy. kantxx ask your provider for it. MonkeyDust: well no. Im already connected.
kantxx i'm not familiar with your setup, can you elaborate? MonkeyDust: im on a laptop. I want a proxy so I can connect to the internet while using my phone. kantxx I know, but you did not say it. MonkeyDust: well. Is that not what you asked? kantxx yes, but there's more to it than that. MonkeyDust: ok. I want to know how to set up my proxy.
kantxx and what do you mean by "proxy"? MonkeyDust: I want a proxy to access the internet on my phone. kantxx then you don't need a proxy, use a mobile hotspot. kantxx or use wifi tethering. MonkeyDust: wifi tethering? kantxx yes, you want to use your phone as a wifi hotspot

How to configure forward proxy in Linux?

I have set up a linux box as a forward proxy in front of the intranet.

All internet traffic goes through the proxy. The IP address of the proxy is 10.42.8.

The problem is that my web browser (Firefox) sometimes goes out of its way to access my internet sites at home. These sites are accessible from 10.8, and from the browser's address bar I see the correct site URL, but instead of accessing my intranet, it goes to my internet site. (It uses HTTP proxy for the request, not SOCKS.) I'd like to avoid the workaround of turning off the internet in order for the browser to work correctly. How do I configure the Linux box so that it correctly forwards intranet accesses to the intranet, while forwarding internet accesses to the external sites? Thanks.

You may want to add: httpproxy 127.1 in /etc/environment and check to make sure that it works. That's if you want the entire box to be a proxy - if you want to restrict it to certain users, add to the users' ~/. If they were using telnet or SSH without the -x flag, this environment variable would not be set for them.
