Why not to use Proton VPN?
ProtonVPN has been in the spotlight a few times lately, most notably when we covered its Free service in our recent review, something that was a common talking point amongst our team.
If you are familiar with ProtonVPN, then this review is probably not much of a surprise to you.
However, it seems like ProtonVPN are not the only ones to run into problems with their free service, and this time, they've actually had to put out an official statement, which was released earlier today. Read on for all the details.
The Statement. ProtonVPN are saying that they have had to suspend all Free VPN accounts due to overwhelming demand. They believe that they are handling the traffic capacity appropriately, but the issue is that their servers have been overwhelmed by so many concurrent connections.
In a nutshell, they are claiming that Free VPN users are effectively causing the main server to overload, which is a little odd as you would expect that the Free plan would be more popular, but the fact that they have had to suspend free VPN accounts is indicative of a problem. ProtonVPN's Statement. In the statement that ProtonVPN have released, they are saying that their staff have had to shut down the free servers due to overwhelming demand. They claim that they have enough capacity on their servers to handle even hundreds of thousands of users and they have been operating these servers very effectively up until now.
They also state that they have been doing everything we can to support customers with their requests to maintain access to the network. They are saying that they have a few free servers in the USA to accommodate those who can't access their service otherwise, but the network is not stable enough for these servers.
They also state that they have had to suspend Free VPN service because the load on their servers is too high. They claim that their staff have been trying to make sure that these Free VPN users are able to access the network when needed, but it just hasn't been possible, and it is also not safe for them to keep the servers online for long periods of time.
There is also mention of the ProtonVPN staff being unable to access the network while using a free VPN service, which is also notable.
Does Proton VPN hide history from router?
I downloaded and used the Proton VPN on my laptop and then I unplugged it but later I plugged it again.
Does it mean that even if the router is turned off, we still see the information from our devices? Is it true? I ask because I didn't think it could be that case. The Proton web server uses a local file (ie it reads from a local directory) so it doesn't leave a trace of where you have connected. If you use the OpenVPN mode, your activity gets logged to the log file, but that's all. It's not an issue because the log file never touches the internet, only Proton servers can read it.
Can Proton VPN be installed on router?
This is a discussion on ?
Within the Networking forums, part of the Tech Support Forum category. Just want to confirm whether I can install the VPN client on the router. (Linksys WRT54G2).
Re: Can Proton VPN be installed on router? Thanks for your reply. So we have to do everything manually then? If that's the case, should I have a separate subnet for the VPN? (ie create a new subnet and assign it to a different IP address, then change all my IP addresses to point to that subnet?). The VPN client will install on the computer. But you must follow the instructions on the VPN. There is no way that I know of to install the VPN client on the router. I don't think that it is possible.
Yes, you can install the VPN on your PC. The router will not allow you to do that because it doesn't know how to process VPN traffic. So you will need to configure the VPN client on your PC.
All of this can be done in your normal wireless LAN using a regular access point, but if you are going to do this with a Cisco router, you will need to use a special VPN client. I'm using an Archer C7 router, I've been following the instructions on the Proton site and so far have successfully completed the first few steps. However I can't seem to get past the fourth step, which is "connect to the server". When I type in the URL in my browser, the connection fails. Is there something I'm missing?
