What VPN works with TP-Link routers?
TP-Link routers and devices support several VPN protocols, which can be used to obtain virtual private network (VPN) functionality. This article describes the most common VPN protocols and how they work, as well as how you can enable them on your TP-Link router. TP-Link provides specific instructions on enabling the protocols at the configuration page for some devices. Others are enabled by default. Follow these instructions if they are available.
PPTP (Point-to-Point Tunneling Protocol). The PPTP protocol allows devices running Windows XP or later to have a secure, encrypted data connection. PPTP was originally developed by the U.S. Department of Defense as an additional option for users to get VPN access via Point-to-Point Protocol (PPP).
PPTP connects to a PPTP server to establish a secure point-to-point tunnel that uses 128-bit encryption, and uses public key encryption to establish the session key. The PPTP security model uses one public key encryption key and one private key for data encryption. Encryption is automatically terminated when the data connection is not in use. PPTP is used for both secure Web browsing and file transfer. PPTP has many advantages over other VPN methods:
Secure: The connection uses a strong authentication scheme based on certificates provided by the VPN server. As with SSH, using a certificate also prevents eavesdropping.
Configurable Encryption: The connection uses standard VPN protocols for the IPsec Encapsulation Security Payload (ESP) and Authentication Header (AH) protocols. Users can configure PPTP connections to allow for up to 5 simultaneous data sessions and select different encryption keys for each session. These keys can also be configured to remain intact during power down and resume.
Reliable: PPTP operates in peer-to-peer mode, using the Relay Service from the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF). This means PPTP connections do not require TCP or UDP ports to reach their destination. PPTP connections run over TCP port 1723. PPTP does not require a fixed IP address because it utilizes encapsulation of the data packet in the L2 Frame Information List, which contains the information needed to complete the destination address calculation, and can provide TCP services to devices outside the company.

I would like to know if you are aware that TP-Link routers do not support NordVPN? I would like to use NordVPN for this router, but I do not know if it will work. Thank you for your help. There are currently 4 versions of the router that supports NordVPN (as seen here). However, their most recent releases are not compatible with OpenWRT so it's probably best to stick to one of the older releases. I recommend 8.09 or 8.04.

In the OpenVPN configuration file, locate the line that says ;client-config-dir=/etc/openvpn/clients, and change the name of the client config directory so it looks like this: ;client-config-dir=/etc/openvpn/clientsmydomain. Save the file and close the editor. Save the OpenVPN configuration file to your server, and copy it to the /etc/openvpn/ directory in your TP-Link router. You may get an error saying, Unable to generate keyshare and Diffie Hellman parameters, which means your TP-Link router doesn't support the Diffie Hellman key exchange method. If this is the case, look for a more recent router that does support Diffie Hellman and connect using that instead.
