Is it truly positive? If you ask a teacher about it, he/she will tell you something different. To me, there is so much more to the concept of giving feedback than meets the eye. Is it a 'constructive tool', a valuable source of knowledge or perhaps a way to express your opinion? These are a few of my perceptions.

The essence of any relationship - be it teacher-student, employee-boss, husband-wife, parent-child, or any other - is how well do I understand and like myself, and how well does that make me understand others? The teacher I am talking about here is myself, of course. My first lesson on the art of giving feedback came during my final years at university, when I enrolled as a teacher candidate. We had been told from day one that in order to master this craft of teaching, you must know how to give feedback. However, for a young, 21-year-old, in my position, how on earth can I develop any kind of skill and become an expert?

I was a novice and had barely entered the professional environment of work. In my opinion, I understood myself very little. I knew I had a soft spot for children. I loved my family and everyone who came into contact with them. From the start, I could sense when someone was not quite right with them. From those early days, I felt that everyone wanted some kind of advice from me.

We were at school, kindergarten to senior secondary school, where there was a good proportion of boys in our classes. When I went for interviews, a new principal showed me an old file with a photo of a pupil standing among the rest of the class. The principal asked me if I would like to take on this boy as a student and give him feedback. The boy was very shy; he seemed unable to speak. He didn't want to speak with anyone other than the headmaster. I remember clearly the principal's question. I was not sure whether he wanted me to give him feedback or punish him, although I suspected he had more punishment in mind. I said yes, of course.

Is that a yes? the principal exclaimed, happy with the answer. He walked away, leaving me alone with the boy.

Why is giving and receiving feedback important in leadership?

It appears that the best leaders give feedback, and then are genuinely surprised and appreciative when they get it. If the leader doesn't receive any feedback, do you think the leader will be motivated? If the leader receives constructive feedback, does he/she understand the importance of giving feedback? Are his/her actions guided by personal preferences or by the needs of others? Leaders know that a good leader gives feedback. When he/she delivers feedback, then the team understands the necessity of delivering constructive feedback.

Giving Feedback is Like Giving Oxygen for Growth. This is one of my top five favorite sayings from The Leadership Latt. This point is very clear if you look at the picture in Figure 6. Oxygen is a gas which is essential to human life. When we don't get a decent amount of oxygen, we become unhealthy and can die. This is why we need to deliver feedback to our teams, friends, family, etc. The team is being unhealthy.

Now let me explain. The most effective leaders are those who can see the flaws and gaps within their own organization. In other words, the leaders are the eyes of the organizations. You should not try to improve your organization. You should try to improve yourself. You should improve your own actions.

However, the eyes can only see when they have been fed with feedback. So what is it that feeds the leader? Well, it is not easy. It is not simple. It is not even an easy answer. You have to be an excellent leader, listener. You have to be a genuine human.

But this can be difficult, so don't worry. We have to be born again. We have to change. We must get rid of our old thinking and habits.

When you have a feedback from a good leader, this can motivate you to want to change. The feedback may be a compliment, so the leader is very encouraging. The feedback may be just enough to stop you from doing something wrong.
