What is the role of management?

What is management by means?

This is something which occurs at a high level of the organisation.

At a strategic or corporate level.

At this level, there will be management processes. In other words, each person is involved in some form of management. So the whole company could be managed.

Management by means. It is not about management by exception. It is just about the way people are used.

Management by exception means managing your organization by a detailed list of rules and expectations. (wikipedia). It is very common in Japan, where the whole economy, everything that is produced is supposed to be sold to every customer to sell their product/service. So in almost every company, every employee is managing customer's requests/orders/tasks and selling the company's goods/service by following certain rules/expectations/policies.

On the other hand, if your whole team works like a family, a close group of friends, then there might be no management.

What is the role of management?

Management is a combination of people, strategy, technology, and creativity.

Managers drive change by implementing strategies, selecting the right technologies, developing creative ways to solve problems, and aligning people and processes. As you consider how to build your management capabilities, you need to consider the answers to the following questions.

What will management do? What kind of impact do we want to make in our lives and work? How much time and effort do we want to put into our organizations? How satisfied are we with our relationships? These are all questions that managers are asking themselves as they develop their careers, and many are thinking of how to change their lifestyles and work experiences as they try to prepare for their next steps. Some are just coming to the end of their careers.

What is your definition of management?

You may have a different opinion from me, but I personally don't think management is someone in a suit and tie, sitting behind a desk.

For instance, when you think of a football coach, what comes to mind? Do you think of a coach in a suit and tie, sitting behind a desk? Or do you think of someone in the stadium coaching the players? Maybe even a cheerleader? I don't think of either of those as "management." The point is, we don't think of managers as sitting behind a desk. We think of them as standing behind a desk, or standing in the crowd. In fact, a manager might even be on the sidelines or in the locker room.

Or, if you're running a franchise, the manager might be somewhere else entirely. That's why I think of management as being a big part of the organization. It's not someone sitting in a suit and tie, sitting behind a desk.

It's everyone who works for the organization. And, that includes you. If you're the CEO of a company, the CFO, the COO, or any other important position within the organization, you're a manager. You're one of the people who are making sure the organization is running efficiently. You're one of the people who are making sure that the right decisions are being made. You're one of the people who are leading the organization. How you do what you do is less important than the fact that you're doing it. In fact, the only person who cares about how you do what you do is you. The rest of us are interested in results.

And, that's why I don't think of a football coach as a manager. He's the leader of the team. He's the one who makes the decisions on the field. But, he's the one who walks off the field when his job is done. He's the one who cares about results. And, that's how I think of the people in my life who are responsible for leading an organization. Those are the people who are the management. People who are responsible for making the right decisions. They're the people who care about results.
