What type of connection is PureVPN?

Should I use IKEv2 or WireGuard?

As part of a new client project, I have been asked to weigh in on the relative merits of IKEv2 and WireGuard VPN technologies.

If were just building a simple client that connects to a few VPN servers and doesn't need authentication (just uses user and password), which would better? Can someone help me work through some pros and cons so I can better decide if this is something we should use? For example, would IKEv2 or WireGuard better if we are connecting to about 10 different VPNs for a small to medium sized business? I think I've seen somewhere that IKEv2 has some scalability issues, but I could be wrong. If so, is that why we should use WireGuard instead? Note: This isn't meant to be an overly long question since I'm not an expert. But I was hoping there was at least one expert who could help me understand the strengths and weaknesses of these two technologies.

You probably aren't going to find a general recommendation for these two technologies. There is nothing wrong with choosing one over the other. The answer really depends on your specific configuration.

@tigeravatar - I didn't want to come off as saying I was an expert. I think IKEv2 and WireGuard may not be the best way for this scenario, but that is because of a specific problem we're trying to solve in the application.

IKEv2 is the standard for IKEv1 / SRTP. If you need to support both IKEv1 and IKEv2 then IKEv2 should be used because it is the standard. Also, the code is built into the Linux kernel which means you don't need to install any additional software. WireGuard uses a slightly different method of creating VPNs and so you will need to install some additional software to be able to use it.

More information about IKEv2 and WireGuard can be found here: WireGuard is an easy-to-use replacement for IKEv1/IKEv2, but with one big improvement: it only supports connections from client to server.
