How do I create a Riseup email?
Here's some information on how to create a new Riseup email.
(Make sure you check the FAQ for more background info before you do.)
The basic idea is that your email account is used by everyone on your team who wants to communicate with you. That may mean a number of people working for the company, all of whom need to be able to access your account so they can send you messages. Or it might mean one person, the "owner", whose account is used by multiple others. Whatever you have now, it needs to work well for communicating with multiple parties - ideally you want people on your team who aren't on your team to be able to send you messages. So make sure you've got the right email for the right people.
This guide is specifically for creating new Riseup emails; if you're just migrating an existing account, read through the FAQ section first. If you're migrating from another service, please also read through the Migration section.
If you're starting with an existing Riseup account, it will already have most of the necessary configuration information, although we suggest at least setting up two-factor authentication (2FA) if you haven't done so yet. If you have any questions about the steps here, just reply to this email with "How do I." in the subject line, and we'll answer them in a subsequent message.
Step 1: Create a new account. Login to your Riseup account. Go to the "Profile" tab of your account, then click "Create Account" and enter the following details: Email address. Password. (If you don't get an error when you put in the email address, but get a prompt for a 2FA code, enter the code shown here, then click "Continue"). Incoming mail server. The hostname of the machine you are creating your email account for. This may differ from what you see in the rest of your network - for example, it may be your development machine, rather than the mail server you use with other services. Usually it is the name you would expect to see when you are logging in to your development machine. For example, a Riseup development environment may look like dev01.riseupmail.com, or dev02.
The SMTP server of the hostname you chose above.

Is riseup email secure?
I use RiseUp email to stay up-to-date on various projects.
While there's a chance that emails could get intercepted along the way, I do think this is a risk. But , and where are your credentials stored?
Update, Jan. 21: Riseup confirmed they don't store your credentials at all. The email you receive is not actually your name attached to the email, but an encrypted version. Read more about how it works in these comments:
Riseup: Your credentials are stored on our website. We encrypt the data before you get it, and we store it all on the web servers of a company which has no connection with us at all. Your information is never available on our servers. Our only purpose is to send you the link to unlock your account, so you can check your email. You can delete your email address anytime you want, and remove the you are receiving this because line if you prefer not to receive any messages from us. The only place where it remains is in the database from where we retrieve it when you unlock your account. If Riseup goes down, nothing happens. We've only lost 2% of our registered users so far, most of them probably realized it was too risky to use Riseup, but very few people actually have any problems with their email addresses and login passwords.
But even if it is secure, I still wouldn't trust Riseup as my go-to email, because of the other services they do: They claim to operate in 25 countries. The US isn't one of them. If the government decided to shut Riseup down or put pressure on riseup.net, all the US and Canada residents would instantly lose access to their email accounts and that's assuming the email wouldn't be redirected automatically to a new domain. It seems hard to believe that this company exists without any kind of protection against such an event. As someone who lives in Japan, I can confirm this isn't true.
Riseup says that 99.999% of our data is encrypted when you upload your content. This doesn't appear to be true based on the way their database is described in these paragraphs from their help guide.

Riseup is free for anyone who wishes to use it.
However, there are some limitations. First, you can only connect up to 5 devices at a time. Secondly, you are limited to 4 simultaneous connections from different locations. If you're planning to use riseup on your smartphone and your laptop, you will need to connect to the riseup VPN server in another location. This might not be an issue for most people, but if you have multiple computers at home and you want to connect to riseup from different locations, this might be a problem.
How does riseup VPN work? When you're connected to riseup, your internet traffic is encrypted with 128-bit AES encryption. Riseup has servers in multiple countries, so this will allow you to connect to riseup from anywhere in the world.
