Does that mean I can have all of my contacts, text messages, photos, and videos backed up to the iCloud? If you can't use it for your own reason, it is just an alternative for you to access your phone on your computer or laptop. But I wonder why you need to turn on the iCloud service if you already have your own data in the cloud.

You can turn off the iCloud account in the "Settings" screen. If you want to use it, you can use the computer to synchronize all of your data to the cloud, but I'm not sure whether it's better than just storing it on your phone.
